Fantastic news for fans of Egosoft space simulation games, as they have now actually confirmed that X4: Foundations [Official Site] will be on Linux.

News comes thanks to a Twitter post we were tagged in, were the developer replied and said this:

We definitely plan to support Linux. If it will be released from the start or a little later will be decided close to release.

It's going to be exciting, especially as their engine now uses Vulkan allowing them to use some more advanced features and hopefully keep performance in check too.

It does sound like it's going to be quite a feature filled game, giving you the ability to seamlessly move between ships and walk around big space stations. They've also revamped the station and spacecraft construction features, to give you many more options. Egosoft also say it's the most dynamic game in the X universe yet, as other species and factions will have the same ability to construct and expand as you do.

For the most up to date talk about the game, you can see this video they did at the end of 2017 going over various features.

Egosoft also celebrated 30 years of game developement as of last month, so that's a pretty damn impressive milestone.

Computers these days don't need sector portals or HIGHWAYS to disguise precision and dimensional limitations. Somebody should inform Egosoft, ditch them all together and just make it full open space, boom. Fixed!

Although some jump portals might make sense for long distance since its a viable technological idea, just not everywhere.

Quoting: PatolaX: Rebirth has a lot of haters just because it was different from X3. But it is an amazing game by itself... specially if you improve it with mods (e.g. to skip micromanagement, improve AI - usually not necessary anymore - or spice it up).

I own the game but haven't given it that much time. Any suggestion on mods to use?

LoL. X:Rebirth a secret masterpiece! HAHAHAHAHAA.

Totally agree with Riddick. They are not able to cut off their old tails, technologically stuck in the 90ies attempting to fix it at the wrong end. Now the universe is even more static and feels less than space than ever before...

Good News! And I thought I was the only one out there who was too afraid _really_ play X Rebirth. Had huge fun playing X3, though.

I will buy X4 anyway. Would be cool if traveling was more expensive than just time. (Or make that a checkbox?)

The instantaneous transport method of portals was a game decision by the developers, have you played IW2? still holds up to be one of the best today.

This is absolutely exciting! I hope the game will be a great success for Egosoft after their bad luck with "Rebirth" on release. I played the X3 games, loved them.

Quoting: TheRiddickI have X Rebirth but have been too afraid to try it.. I gotta stop buying games and never playing them, lol

Maybe they should offer a discount for X Rebirth owners, as penitence?

X:R might have been fine if they didn't spend so much resource on making those retarded NPC characters the MAIN thing with the game, people got sick of them fast!

I need to do the same last count i have 107 games in my steam library i have either never played or have less than 1 minute play time

All this talk of X4 inspired me to take the plunge on X3:Rebirth. Voice acting is a bit rusty, but the gameplay (so far, 3 hours in) is excellent. Really enjoying it - surprisingly beautiful graphics considering it was originally launched in 2013.
