Kalypso Media now officially own the rights to the Commandos IP which could mean good things for Linux gamers.

Kalypso Media have been pretty good to Linux gamers in recent years, with them publishing Linux titles like Sudden Strike 4, Railway Empire, Dungeons 3, Tropico 6 (coming soon) and plenty more.

In the press email they sent out, Simon Hellwig, founder and Global Managing Director of the Kalypso Media Group said this:

We have great respect for what the Pyro Studios team have accomplished and created throughout the history of the studio. Therefore, we see it as our responsibility to want to revive and further develop these beloved games for the fans around the world. Of course, this will include the development of a completely new games for all platforms, but also an extensive adaptation of the existing titles for contemporary technologies and platforms. We’re incredibly excited about the opportunities, and will begin speaking to potential development studios in the near future.

Given their wording, it sounds like we might see classics updated to support Linux along with the new game they're working on.

WIll keep an eye on it and let you know of any further developments towards Linux support. As someone who spent hours playing the original Commandos, having it updated with Linux support would be pretty incredible. Stranger things have happened, so it's certainly possible.

Kalypso have been rather Linux friendly as of late, so this bodes well for us.

They told me this on Twitter:

https://twitter.com/kalypsomedia/status/1017352111959543810

"Wir diskutieren Linux grundsätzlich als Option - wir steigen hier aber grade mal erst in die Planung ein, dauert also noch, bis wir dazu irgendetwas sagen können."

which translates to:

"We are always discussing Linux as an option - but we're just starting planning here, so it will take a while until we can say something about it."

This is great news. Kind of a pain to play the originals nowadays.

Looking forward to see more and hopefully Linux confirmation:)

Nice timing, I was just wondering if Commandos get ported to Linux, as I was purchasing the freshly ported Desperados. :-)

Nice, as long as they'll release their games on GOG. Vikings: Wolves of Midgard never made it there.

Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood landed on Linux before Linux Gaming was a thing ;)

I've the CD-ROM sitting on my shelf.

Nice. Seems the only one Kalypso has published lately that didn't make it was Urban Empire. But reviews for that are mixed.

I only played one of the Commandos games way back in the Windows 95/98 days. I'd be very interested to get a new one!

I wasn't the biggest fan of the Commando series but having more Linux games won't be a bad thing if they do make it over.

Probably true. I don't see why it shouldn't work any more. Got Railroad Tycoon II running lately again as well. It may be more tricky but should be possible. Afair it uses SDL too. The usual problems are required glib compat lib and probably some X11 compat lib nowadays.

I tried this last in 2008 and wrote this Wiki entry for linuxgaming.de

…also RuneSoft still exists. Mayhap they have some patch somewhere hidden :)
Edith says: Well it still lists Linux but only a patch for OSX Lion: http://www.rune-soft.com/Games/Released/Game-239/game=Robin_Hood_The_Legend_of_Sherwood-13

desperados also worked on win7 and above, but the performance was crap and there are old games, that just dont work on modern OS.
even if it works, i think i couldnt buy it anymore and i dont think there are resolutions for 1920x1080, so the game needs a patch.
