King under the Mountain is a new fantasy settlement-building strategy game that's now crowdfunding and it even has a Linux demo available. It sounds pretty good too!

While there's many games that see you build some sort of colony like RimWorld, not many mix up the gameplay in such a way as King under the Mountain. It has two modes at play, the simulated environment where you actually build your settlement with a day and night cycle, seasons that change aspects of the map, weather that affects the terrain and so on. There's also the dungeon crawling feature, where you send off a party of your finest to explore and you're given direct control over them—similar to what you can do in KeeperRL, although King under the Mountain already sounds a lot more advanced and seems like a much bigger game.

They're paying special attention to the modding community too, as they say "all content in the game is moddable" and the main game is essential a mod itself.

I know Linux gamers have been put off by some developers failing on their Linux version promise, most recently Radiant Entertainment with Stonehearth, but given that British developer Rocket Jump Technology has already put out a prototype that works on Linux, it might be a much safer bet.

To grab the prototype, it can be found on itch.io right now for everyone, but they do note that it's very early in development. Even so, it seems to run quite nicely on Linux, although the UI buttons are a bit too large.

King under the Mountain can be found on Kickstarter here. They have only a small goal at £10K, with almost £2K pledged already and around 30 days to go so they should easily hit it.

Hat tip again to NuSuey/TuxDB.

Sounds (and looks) like it's a simplified Dwarf Fortress. Good luck to them.

Looks like a medieval version of Rimworld to me.

Seems interesting , but after getting burned with Towns and Gnomoria I am a bit skeptical.
Still Prison Architect, Rimworld and Rise to Ruins are turning out pretty well , so maybe this will fall in that category.
I just kind of understood that Dwarf Fortress cannot be matched.

<sarcasm>Whoa, that's like a totally new game concept! And all the mechanics shown in the video make it absolutely clear that it's not just a 1:1 clone of another successful title.</sarcasm>

But is Dwarf Fortress really learn-able?

I'm not going to deny that the learning curve is steep, but, so long as you're willing to put in the effort to learn, you will get there eventually.

As an Arch user, you should be fine. :P

Thanks. I will give Dwarf Fortress a try sometime. I've had it installed for several weeks now but have been gun shy.
