The retro FPS from Voidpoint and 3D Realms is officially getting multiplayer along with a note about a delayed final release.

Sent out today via press channels, they said that it was originally due for a full release in Q3 of this year, however they're pushing it back to "early 2019" as they want to ensure it "meets the same level of polish as other FPS classics from 3D Realms". They're planning a multiplayer beta closer to the final launch, although they're not really giving out any details on exactly how the multiplayer will work other than saying it will be "old-school multiplayer".

They've also announced a limited 500 boxed copy "Founder’s Edition" which will cost $99.99 (not including shipping) and each will be individually numbered, which you can pre-order from the official site.

It will include:

  • 6’’ Bombshell Figurine
  • Ion Maiden’s Original Soundtrack
  • Ion Maiden Mousepad
  • Key Art Poster
  • Bowling Bomb Stickers
  • Lanyard
  • 3 1:1 Scale Key Card Magnets
  • A “Coming Soon from 3D Realms” Catalogue Highlighting Exciting Upcoming Projects

You can grab the early builds right now from GOG and Steam, well worth a look if you like a truly retro experience. Runs like a dream for me and feels really good, fantastic to have it on Linux.

This game will be -is- on my Top 5 games of the last 15 years, not kidding.
From the preview we can really know it's going to be an amazing game. Can't get that awesome box but if they release more digital stuff I'm getting all the deluxe I can hahha.

I got to ask as from what i have seen gameplay wise is it a shooting gallery and story is an after thought or is there a narrative.I am not knocking that type of game its just not my jam i play games for the story and setting.

Lovely!

You are part of the team, right?
In that case, do you know if one could sign an NDA and sell their soul to get a source of your version of the Build engine?
I'd love to play around with that - I know it is probably based on jfbuild, but I have a feeling there is way more to your version.

It's a classic game in the style of games like Duke3D, so while there is technically a story and progression it's not all explicitly told to you. It is not, however, an arena shooter, or even in that style (like Serious Sam, Painkiller, Doom 2016, etc). Levels and encounters are very intentionally designed. Design wise it's definitely a child of the 90s.

I bought it. I rocked the preview. I am excited to play the full-thing when it comes out. Multiplayer better work for the DRM-FREE version.

I play TF2 every evening, it is really fun :D Otherwise I recommend Insurgency, also quite fun if you play the "unranked competetive" servers - the other modes kinda suck IMO.

Otherwise I totally agree. I wish I could play Overwatch. Perhaps Ion Maiden will be MP awesome.

It seems they don't ship the Founders Edition to the Faroe Islands. Oh well, it was worth a shot. In any case I won't miss out on the game itself seeing as I own it on 3drealms.com and GOG and Steam.

Did you buy it a few times or one time somewhere and it gave you all the keys?

I got it direct from the site.
Kristian 18 Jul 2018
I bought it 3 times to show my support.

That's stellar. I am hoping they will provide a GOG key as some point because the installer on their site does not seem to work on Ubuntu Mate 18.04 at this time.

I think it needs a symlink but I can never get those right.
Mblackwell 18 Jul 2018
The installer on the 3DR website for whatever reason was packaged as an EXE, but it's really just a self extracting archive. You can extract the contents to whatever folder you would like and it should be good to go as far as I know. You might need to set maiden.bin (or maiden_nodrm.bin, can't remember which file is included) as an executable to get it going I don't make the packages so I'm sorry I can't give you more advice than that. If things aren't working and you can tell me the exact problems you are having (and even if when running there are errors) I will do my best to help.

Ahh okay may give it a try then because my fear was it was going to be along the painkiller lines (again not my thing i know some people love that style).
