Valve, CodeWeavers and the community have continued updating Steam Play's Proton and now the beta version of Proton has another new build out.
Don't know what Steam Play is? See Valve's official announcement. In short: It will allow you to play some Windows games on Linux through the Steam client as if they were any other Linux game.
To avoid some confusion: The Steam Play system as a whole is still in Beta, Proton (Valve's Wine fork) which Steam Play uses has a "3.7-3" version which is the default, but you can also switch to the Beta version of Proton itself in Steam's settings (compatibility tool dropdown box) to get Proton "3.7-5" which was just released today.
Here's the highlights of what's new in 3.7-5:
- Performance improvements for timing APIs in CPU-limited scenarios
- Automatically capture mouse in fullscreen windows is enabled by default.
- More display ratios have smaller resolutions available.
- Fix a crash on old versions of SDL.
- Fix for mouse cursor drifting in Deus Ex.
- Debug script dump directory can be configured with "PROTON_DEBUG_DIR".
- Further improvements to fullscreen focus and python3 compatibility.
See the changelog here.
Honestly, it's really fun to watch this progress. There's been such a huge amount of excitement in the entire PC industry over this, it's crazy. It's going to be a while before we see what kind of impact it has, but this does give it time to mature for any scenario.
If you're after help with it, you can join our Discord Server which has a dedicated "proton-gaming" channel. We also have an IRC channel which is #gamingonlinux on freenode. Other social links can be found in our website footer.
As a reminder, Valve did state to report issues with games running in Proton to them and not to the developer of the game.
Played some Witcher 3 GotY yesterday, it just works out of the box for me. Runs @60FPS stable on Ultra settings without nvidia hairworks. Proton seems to be really nice :)
It already works like a charm w/ Vanilla Wine/devel from GOG so it is no surprise.
However proton games should all run in windowed mode otherwise they do not survive to alt-tab.

If they don't survive alt tab, report to Valve.Played some Witcher 3 GotY yesterday, it just works out of the box for me. Runs @60FPS stable on Ultra settings without nvidia hairworks. Proton seems to be really nice :)

Proton seems to be really nice :)The only problem is that the game requires stream output to be added to vulkan and implemented on dxvk or you want able to see some monsters that need it. This is why they don't add it to the white list.
oh wait I just remembered Dungeon Siege 2 has a black square for a cursor, fingers crossed anyway.
Well there no more drifting cursor at least, that's good news, I just have to remember how to change to custom resolution so I can play through the first game again.

Anyone know to disable the proton logs. They are eating more than 500MB of my almost full SSD.
Hi, can you tell me where the logs are located?

It has already been reported many times. I got the issue with every game I tried including Doom. Not a big deal as I prefer playing in windowed mode.
Anyway some games are affected by the issue with true MS Windows.
Guess you can say this is picking up steam. ?
I think we can safely say that. After just a week there are already 771 issues created and 26 pull requests. You can't easily find projects with this much activity so early.
This is not exactly true since the majority are whitelist requests.
Of the 799 issues open currently only 304 are whitelist requests, but in any case, activity is activity.Guess you can say this is picking up steam. ?

Fullscreen not working is/could be a big deal for many if not most. For me it would be a deal breaker. Hopefully any issues with fullscreen will fe fixed soon.

You know how Valve had 27 titles on the "whitelist" when they launched this new Google Play?
Did you ponder on the number 27?
Linux are celebrating it's 27th birthday these days!
Maybe you guys understood this right from the start, but it struck me only yesterday:*ROFL*

Maybe so.

I seriously, no joking whatsoever, believe that's the exact reason. Both the launch and the number is exactly around the 27th birthday. This is no coincidence.
IRC is not a place.Actually, Zirc is a place (in Hungary :-). So if he mentioned Z.
Is Sirmentio a member here??? Whoever you are THANK YOU!!!!

Thanks for the tip, but it seems to be at 60 already.Heh. After me saying just this afternoon that Risen works perfectly apart from not saving, it now doesn't start at all.Try to find the configuration file and reset the refreshrate to 60. Helped the last time i updated my wine version for risen.
On the bright side, I found my saves. It looks as if it's writing them to one location and trying to read them from another. Which is really strange. Once I get it working again, I'll have to try putting the files I've found in the empty directory I think it's looking in, to see if my hunch is correct. Although it doesn't explain why it's happening.
Edit: Well, I don't know what happened, but it's working now. No updates or anything. And I was right about the saves. A quick symlink sorted it. Issue filed.

And also, Valve did ask people to send issues to them, not the game developer.
Important information, I think. Perhaps worth to be added in the article and maybe even to be repeated in every article about Proton? Just to prevent that developers get really annoyed of Linux players.
that's cool but i would still rather have an out of the box experience with quake 2 we need to move away from doing external things which i hope proton offers more and more as they update itAgree with you totally, but the workaround is there just in case it takes a while.
What I said still applies. They need the anti-cheat in, as people will attempt to do all kinds of crap in *all* game modes. They also need the anti-cheat to be thoroughly tested before the full release. From your steam post:
I don't know why it's such a big deal to have EAC there for that in a beta, especially when this beta will have all in-game stats/unlocks wiped clean at the end.People do all sorts of shitty hacks to ruin games. It's not just about gaming progression, it's about the experience for players.
And also, Valve did ask people to send issues to them, not the game developer.
I think it would be pertinent to give my quote context (i.e. the whole non-truncated sentence):
I only really am interested in playing co-op, and I don't know why it's such a big deal to have EAC there for that in a beta, especially when this beta will have all in-game stats/unlocks wiped clean at the end.
I guess I fail to see how anyone would want to cheat in a co-op mode in a non-stat-saved beta.
Yes, a good point. And also, Valve did ask people to send issues to them, not the game developer.
