The Total War team along with Feral Interactive have confirmed that Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is officially coming to Linux.

Honestly, I don't think this was supposed to be confirmed quite so soon. Especially given that Feral Interactive only teased something big for us next week. This has replaced the "Working with fire and steel" teaser that was on Feral's port radar, with one teaser still not named yet.

I actually follow the official Total War blog, where the developers post all sorts of updates about what's coming. Right down at the bottom of the pre-order FAQ for Total War: THREE KINGDOMS was this:

MacOS/Linux Release
Will the game be released on Mac and Linux?

Yes, Feral Interactive is working on macOS & Linux versions that will release shortly after the Windows release. You can expect those to land later on in Spring 2019.

As I was writing this, Feral Interactive then also confirmed it on Twitter and their official site requiring me to hastily re-write this whole thing before publishing, but hey it happens. Feral are saying it will be due "shortly after" the Windows version.

Anyway, here's a little more about the game:

Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is the first in the multi award-winning strategy series to recreate epic conflict across ancient China. Combining a gripping turn-based campaign game of empire-building, statecraft and conquest with stunning real-time battles, Total War: THREE KINGDOMS redefines the series in an age of heroes and legends.

I was just looking at Three Kingdoms 13 the other day. Will probably be playing 2 and 4 on emulators instead because I doubt that will ever be on Linux in any form.
Yeah it's just sad that those are not getting officially translated they are great turn based strategy games, I just don't get Koei Tecmo strategy at times ...
I mean Dynsasty Warriors games are nothing more than Romance of The Three Kingdoms power fantasy trips in beat em up forms and they sell spectacularly in europe , sooo I dunno it's not like we're unfamilliar with that side of chinese history.
Really Koei Tecmo is weird sometimes cuz if they would put in the effort they would make reccord amount of cash with the Romance games ...

How many total war games is this now?
12 being made without counting the spin off series Saga that got it's debut with Thrones of Britania.
And only 10 that have been ported. Three Kingdoms will be the Eleventh total war port on Linux.
Hope it helped.

Especially with TellTaleGames closing down this week I can understand people being afraid of the series over staying its welcome and releasing far too many titles for people to buy but again bear in mind that they are long time sellers and that they alternate pleasing two very different crowds, and they're good at guessing who would like which setup so the money keeps coming in without slowing ;)

(although for Total War Warhammer II , on this one I DO agree that this one came a bit too quickly after the first one , ... but again Total War Games are long time sellers ... so what do I know ... )

Cheers :)

Guess I have to give the whole Total War saga thing another try as so much content is coming.
I rage-uninstalled "Total War: Warhammer" after losing the Empire campaign several times on normal. :D

Let's hope they changed their DLC policy a bit.

I never had a problem with any of the total war games but i love micro manging my settlements and building an unbeatable economy and army before then i either annex or invade each province. Mmmm rts game based on Romance of the three kingdoms (if you exclude the clunky turn based versions) is the first time they have done something like this with the story in the west.

Say what you will about Feral and all of the Total War ports but they make a damn fine port. Rise of the Tomb Raider I think works even better on Linux with Vulkan than it did on Windows 10. I will probably get any native port they make.

Without checking your specs i am willing to bet AMD graphics card ? because Rise ran like trash on 1060 for about a month and half on linux its fixed now that is one of the things i credit feral with when there is a problem with performance or gameplay they patch it and tell people what they are doing to fix it and roughly how long it will take. Compare that with other companies that shit out ports and then go radio silent on support until people complain so loud they have to do something.

Given they'd stated Rome II would have a release for Linux shortly after Windows, and I'm still waiting, I think I'll just sigh instead of holding my breath.

"With Vulkan they now make ports every bit as good as windows native I believe. Every game these days needs patches and I would
assume Linux even more so since there are so many distros and desktop uis to consider. They deserve Linux gamers support which is more than I can say for some of the other porting companies.[/quote]
Yeah they do deserve support however there business model is ports if they were crap at porting they wouldnt have a business model. Feral do good work if its a single player game and Feral ported it i know it will work however VP & Aspyr when they supported linux managed to include cross platform mp in a number of titles Feral to this date still havent managed it not sure whether that is a bi produce of their indirectx wrapper or if its a contract permissions thing.

But yeah I hope Feral stick around I know many on this forum seem to think that they will be around for years to come. But with Proton and steam play the question that most not all but most publishers will ask is why should i pay someone to licence and port our game. When i can do nothing not have to pay any fees and as a bonus, i do not have to offer support to linux and mac users that buy our game net loss to company 0 profit 100 percent.

What's more and am sure people will disagree with my points here but Feral seem to know it at well its why they keep hedging their bets with mobile ports of triple a games so even if mac and linux go away they will still have mobile. Maybe am wrong they have brought out games this year and seem to be busy and they are hiring

Well from the inside it looks a bit different than your worries let it transpire.

Some triple AAA bosses at the announcement of proton went :
"Sweet some more money down our pockets and we didn't have to do anything about it"
To which their employees that are developers answered :
"Oh yeah sure relying on a compatibility layer that is made through painful reverse engineering that is a pain in the butt to maintain and where each new versions contains as many improvements as it contains regressions ... yeah that's a solid way to sell our games and not have people angry at us ... How about no and how about we use it for an intelligent purpose such as assessing Linux and Mac OS gamers levels of interest for our catalogue and see which parts are having enough momentum to justify going the extra mile"

I know that the past of the industry makes it hard to believe but there's more and more Linux friendly devs in the industry that are trying their hardest to talk some reason into their bosses skull.
Heck even Falcom (the creators of the Ys series) admitted their surprise at seeing their games sitting on wine appdb and being talked about by Linux gamers ...
And we're talking "shit what do we do" type of surprise (in japanese there is a word for "panic inducing type of surprise" and that's the one they used talking about it on their Nico Nico livestreams , so at least they have seen that we're here we exist and we're potential customers but they legit don't know what to make of it ... and I sure hope they will eventually at least do one attempt )

And with what I hear from friends here and there , the understanding that proton is just a stop gap and shouldn't be seen as a definite answer is pretty understood.

No more Total War games, please.

I'm not into them either, but I'm happy they seem to be a solid base for Feral's Linux business.
