Another Beta version of Proton is available for Valve's Steam Play for those who wish to give it a go with the latest fixes.

To avoid some confusion: The Steam Play system as a whole is still in Beta, Proton (Valve's Wine fork) which Steam Play uses has a "3.7-3" version which is the default, but you can also switch to the Beta version of Proton itself in Steam's settings (compatibility tool dropdown box) to get Proton "3.7-6" which was just released today.

Proton 3.7-6 highlights:

  • Fix failure to start VR games.
  • Improvements to fullscreen games running at non-native resolutions.
  • Compatibility fix for games that use Steam integration.
  • Return to previous D3D10 behavior in DXVK to allow games to fallback to D3D9.

Getting it to actually show up in Steam is a bit odd still. Even on a fresh boot today, I had to quit and reload Steam to get the new Beta of Proton to actually show up. Hopefully Valve will improve the user experience there when the Steam Play system is a bit further along.

Also, Valve has now upped the NVIDIA driver requirement to 396.54.

That's good to know, but I wanna play it now. ;)
Then go and play it.
Nah I think I'll wait & find something else to play for now, I've got plenty to test to keep me busy. :D

Quoting: freerunnerliveI love steam. I play the hole weckend skyrim in 4k. Proton forever!!!

Hmmmmpphhh, Mine has the NPC voices bug (where there are no voices for the NPC's). There are some possible workarounds, but I'm really just hoping they get Proton fixed so it just works..

Install XACT into the SKSE prefix, also make sure your open files size is large enough.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've made some effort on the XACT front with some of the issues that others have commented upon, and decided its probably going to be easier to wait for upcoming real fixes that are supposedly coming soon - I'm a patient man. (and I'm running on a headless home built steam machine with intermittent wireless connectivity issues, which makes it a pain)

I haven't heard of any issues regarding "open files" size. I assume that is to do with the kernel parameter fs.file-max... Do you have a link to what is the proper size for "large enough" or any more information at all on that? (I did do some searching to no avail...)
Thanks..

This two games could be Whitelisted:
Darksiders
Dark Souls
but cinematics does not play.
On Wine you have to install wmp9, but it is not possible to install it with Proton, because Proton uses 64 bits prefix and you can not install wmp9 on 64 bits Wine prefix.
I can not wait for Steam to add "Windows Media Player codecs" Proton compatible feature.

Quoting: GuestHere's the command I ended up having to use to get xact installed in Hellblad. If you have it in the default path then just replace hellblad id number with yours and of course your username.

env WINEPREFIX="/home/ron/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/245280/pfx"WINEPATH="/home/ron/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Proton 3.7 Beta/dist/bin" winetricks xact
This didn't help either.

Does the version of an outside install of Wine make a difference to the one installed in Proton? The reason I ask is because up to a few minutes ago I had Wine 3.6 installed, I now have Wine 3.15 installed but Proton is still using 3.7, shouldn't we realistically have the same version of Wine installed outside Proton as in?

I think it doesn't matter and installing Wine isn't even necessary for using Proton. When you use winetricks (which is not a mandatory part of Wine), it changes some wineprefix which is separate from Wine installation any can later be used by any Wine installation in any WINEPATH. I don't know much about Wine though and can be wrong.

Well that's more than I knew before you posted it. :D Thanks. :D

Loving it! Been using linux since 2006, mostly dual booting and distro hoping. One week ago I cleared windows off my PC and now use it completely as a backup drive with "time shift" and now using Ubuntu full time. Full steam ahead!

Quoting: spacemonkeySince the VR should work better I would like to try Everspace. But only the Windows version of Everspace supports VR (the Linux version does not).

So using the `-vr` launch option doesn't work on linux? This is one of the titles that ia tempting me to picking up a headset.

It should work just fine. It's just not officially supported by the dev. You can videos of it working on Linux on YouTube.
Sweet, going to have to remember to give this a try now that I've gotten SteamVR sorted.
