Along with a big update to improve weapon recoil, hitboxes and more, Zombie Panic! Source is getting Linux support.

For those who haven't followed it at all, it's a free multiplayer FPS where you play as either a Zombie or a Survivor. Each side has various strengths and weaknesses of course.

It also has various game modes to keep you entertained:

  • Survival Mode: Put your ability to scavenge and survive to the test. Easily the top player choice.
  • Objective Mode: You’re on a mission. Whether it’s to escape or defeat the horde, you’d better use your brainz to find those keys, get the power back on, hack that computer, and get to the chopper! Otherwise… I think you know what happens.
  • Hardcore Mode: For experienced zombie connoisseurs, you and your teammates get to enjoy pitting yourselves against extra tough foes, and even rougher odds.

Writing about Linux support they said:

Linux Client support for Zombie Panic! Source will finally be coming in v3.1! This is a huge, long-awaited step, opening an important door to another OS besides Windows! (Unfortunately, Mac OS X support is still out of our reach, and not in our plans.)

A huge thanks to our programmer, Shepard, for accomplishing this challenging task! It took a long time - but with extreme dedication, and amazing coordination between both our programmers, we were able to succeed!

In regards to beta testing, they're going to be doing an open beta for it along with the Windows version for the big 3.1 release. They don't have a date set for it yet, as they want to polish it up as much as possible.

I use to play the original version on windows when I was a windows guy. It's an absolutely fantastic game. I never played source though but hey with proton I'll download it and fire it up and see how it goes. Not like it's going to cost me anything. It should work considering it's source.

Does it have any single player or bots ?
Can you host your own server ?
Or are you tied to community servers ?
Just curios what the limitations are at the moment.

Hello everyone, I'm Shepard62FR and I'm the Linux programmer of Zombie Panic! Source. I would like first to thank GamingOnLinux for featuring us on their awesome website, the development team really appreciate it ^^

Now to answer your questions:

Quoting: buenaventuraThis looks really cool, I would love to play it. I wonder when it will be ready?

It will be ready when it will be ready, we hate deadlines because we had bad experiences with them in the past (rushing things and delivering broken stuff is bad).

Quoting: NanobangThank you Shepard!! You're a Linux Hero!!

Thank me once the Linux client will be released and when you'll play the game ^^

Glad to see you played the game in the "old era" ^^ I haven't tried playing the Win32 build through Proton myself so I can't really tell but please do share your experience with your fellow Linux teammates if you do test it ^^

Quoting: razing32Does it have any single player or bots ?

It's a multiplayer only game, there are bots but we do not support them for "actual gameplay" because they don't have a real AI and it takes a lot of time and effort to make a proper one. We only use them for "development/testing" purposes and we recommended the community to use them for these purposes only, but some of them skipped our recommendation and decided to "fix" them and host them on their servers ^^

Quoting: razing32Can you host your own server ?

Yes you can! There are already Linux binaries for dedicated servers, the installation procedure is very similar to installing a dedicated server for any Source game (Counter-Strike: Source/Global Offensive, Half-Life 2: DeathMatch to quote the most populars...)

Quoting: razing32Or are you tied to community servers ?

We have 2 official servers in the EU running the official maps and a third one running official and selected community made maps from the Steam Workshop. There are a lot of community servers that runs official and/or community maps. Be mindful that some of them uses server side plugins that alters the gameplay experience from "vanilla" (the popular one right now being a RPG mod).

Amazing. I played this game so much (both the GoldSrc and then the Source version) before I went cold turkey on GNU/Linux only games. It was one of the harder ones to give up.
Thought I'd never get to play it again, thanks for working on this!

Thanks for joining us, great to have you here.

Excited to give it a go, so no rush let's make it a good one. I think we will have to run a little event when it's out :)

I have tried it on proton and it just crashes once you try to join a server. I thought it was going to work but proton is early in its developement. So I don't expect a lot to work yet very well, but I'm happy it's just happening. I don't know of any work arounds to try sadly. The original game was very fun, it was a long time ago. The more stuff you carry the slower you run, the core aspect of the game was the same just much worse graphics. I very much await the linux build I loved the original game. I would love to play the original some more but oh well.
