Update: Linux version is still happening, they replied to our Twitter post with "Oops! That’s our mistake! We’ll get OSX and Linux up there.".

Main article below

Descendant Studios have teamed up with Little Orbit to bring the new Descent out in full next year, along with a new trailer.

In a Kickstarter post back in August, Descendent Studios noted how they've been able to make the game "bigger and better than we'd ever hoped". In that same post, they also mentioned this:

Soon you will be able to play Descent on XBox1, Playstation 4, PC, Mac, and Linux, look for an announcement on that date from our partners at Little Orbit in the near future.

So as far as we knew, the Linux version was still on. A few days ago, however, they put another update up titled "Honoring our promises" which only mentioned "PC" when talking about an upcoming Beta. They did say that anyone who backed Descent: Underground during their Kickstarter or Early Access will get access to the Beta too.

Also, in their two new trailers like the teaser below (and this longer trailer) only a Windows logo can be seen and the publishers official page only mentions "PC". So I've reached out for some clarification on that today, hopefully it's just an oversight.

"PC". Sick of seeing that, honestly.

Blame apple. "Hi, I'm a mac..."

The gameplay teaser is more specific than "PC". It has the Windows logo. So it is not looking good right now.

Yeah was about to say the same thing there's a Windows logo no Linux logo to be seen though.

Push comes to shove, we still have Overload. Still, I would like to see the devs clarify on the Linux situation.

I keep calling people out on their Windows OS-exclusive use of the term Personal Computer (PC). It's a bad appropriation of established terminology.

Blame IBM for not coming up with a more imaginative name for their personal computer than 'IBM Personal Computer'.

The whole "PC" has been an ambiguous term for a long time. When I was in University, I bought my first computer (A Pentium 100). The computer lab at the university was a lab full of Macintosh PowerPC's.

Someone asked me if I had a PC. I didn't know how to answer which one was a PC?

Admittedly, I was pretty clueless about computer's at the time.

[Edit]I'm a backer, I sure hope Linux support happens. They had a Linux version on the Steam Early Access, didn't they?[/Edit]

Despite the name, Overload is the true successor to the series. It just feels, looks and sounds right. The game formerly known as Descent: Underground didn't excel in any of those terms.

Of course, I'd be more than happy if they improve massively on my first impressions.

What about Descent: Underground bought with Steam?
jarhead_h Oct 5, 2018
Just chiming in, Overload is the true sequel to the Descent series made by people that worked on it. They just can't use the name Descent. If you love 6 degree movement games, and can only afford one, this is the one to get, and not only because it has a native Linux port.

Why do people keep re-using names of games that only came out a few decades ago? Maximum confusion?
rea987 Oct 5, 2018
No! No, no and frakking no! There is already a game called Descent from 1994. AAA publishers pull such stuff all the time (Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Doom, Unreal Tournament, Prey, Tomb Raider, Star War: Battlefront, Battlefield, Need for Speed, etc...), but that doesn't mean indie developers should do the same. sigh...

Yeah, between Prey, Doom and now Descent, it's all becoming a bit of a mystery what games are being talked about.

I guess we need a Quake revival, just for completeness.

To be honest, x86 CPU a good disjunctive to define PC. So, current Macs are PCs. BUT, if Apple decides to leave Intel to use their own CPU as it is rumored for a long time, then they will start being not PC again.

That will not happen since Quake community is quite active and Bethesda keeps mentioning existing Quake as it is. What AAA publishers usually do in subject matter is to leave their own IP in obscurity, then revive/reboot/reimagine it, finally take advantage of familiarity of old players and existing search engine results. The reason that allowed Bethesda to name Doom (2016) as it is the widely accepted bundle name of the original Doom. Doom got popularized with the release of Doom II: Hell on Earth. After Doom 2, id Software released 4th episode, Thy Flesh Consumed for Doom and called whole package as The Ultimate Doom which is widely accepted. Recently Bethesda considered Doom 2 as Doom (2016) sequel but they had to drop it due to popularity of existing Doom II.

Luckily, Bethesda decided to go for a gimmick for Quake instead.

What also doesn't plead in favor of calling Doom Eternal , DOOM II is the fact that the game is now lore rich and will be built upon expansion pack after expansion Pack . It wouldn't have felt right to give that sequel a number. Branding wise it wouldn't have been a good choice. So they went for Doom Eternal. Conveys the idea that its a sequel yes but also that they're moving the licence somewhere else and somwhere more long term.

It's nice that they added a singleplayer campaign, but it's hard to imagine they can pull off a Descent rebirth better than Overload.
TheSyldat Oct 6, 2018
Still would of preffered a reboot of the original Quake though, just the thought of a Q1 reboot makes me drool xD
Thing is with the lore rich direction that DOOM Eternal is going for that would have felt very samy.

Actually reviving Heretic or Hexen would be a better fit but they would have to buy back the rights from Activision's hands.

And for Quake the universe developped in Quake 2 and 4 would be great to revive a put a new spin on. Sorry I'm helpless I love me some Stroggs.
