Feral Interactive just put up a YouTube video to show off Total War: WARHAMMER II running on Linux, it's looking good and they confirmed again their future Linux plans.

What's interesting, is that in this video they did confirm a few interesting bits of extra information. Firstly, they confirmed that Total War: WARHAMMER II is using Vulkan (which we knew already) but the more interesting thing is what they said after. They said "By the way, we do have more sweet sweet Vulkan plans up our sleeves, but they're secret.". It's going to be interesting to find out what they mean by that, since they wouldn't say such a thing if it just meant future ports will use Vulkan, since we already know that as they've said it multiple times before.

Additionally, in regards to a question about Steam Play/Proton being the end of Linux ports, they said "We are happy to say we have lots of plans for Linux, including WARHAMMER II as well as upcoming games like Total War: Three Kingdoms and Life is Strange 2". While those titles were already confirmed previously (I assume this video was recorded before and only now put up) along with the XCOM 2 DLC already released, their wording is interesting as it seems to indicate more are coming which is obviously good news.

They're still not yet confirming a release date, other than later this Autumn.

Anyway, here's the video (Feral said it's played on an Intel Core i7-4790k with 16GB RAM and a Radeon RX 580 8GB):

Quoting: GuestIt would be nice if they ported their old OpenGl games to Vulkan. And also finish up their buggy vulkan renderer in Mad Max.
Deus Ex Mankind Divided would probably see significant gains by switching to vulkan.

I played through Madmax entirely on Vulkan and only encountered a few minor issues. Wouldn't exactly call that buggy.

It might help for Deus Ex though. That's probably the most system hungry game they did so far and the only one that is unplayable for me on 3440x1440. That said, it is especially hard on the GPU, so not sure if it would help that much for my particular case.

When i played Mad Max the game would lock on me a lot while using vulkan. I had to reboot to get the PC to work again. This is the only game using vulkan that had this effect.

That sort of stuff shouldn't happen at all (the game might lock up, not your system), have you checked your drivers, and/or reported the issue?

Quoting: Whitewolfe80question on mesa performance and mad max i have a 4gb rx 550 being used on friend windows build. He has decided he wants to try out linux but he gets about 55/60 fps at 1080p med on windows 10. I have no experience mesa under linux as i have always had nvidia cards what sort of frame rate should he expect i understand there will be some performance loss but will it tank it below a playable steady 30 fps ?

I really can't tell it as a general rule. Feral games tend to be 10-30% slower, other ports are usually on par, or around 10% slower. Relults will vary depending on his CPU as well. In any case, he better use updated drivers (and kernel). If he wants to try Ubuntu, just adding the padoka PPA (valve has instructions for this on their proton github) should be fine (though a kernel upgrade as well won't hurt, usually). He can try some of this on a live stick (though disk i/o might be slower).

Be wary, though: except things to work out of the box! :D

Thanks I think i ll get him up and running and show him how to update his system. Performance hit should be okay will def try that ppa.

Quoting: chancho_zombiehope the vulkan plans are multi gpu support, there are no games with multi gpu on linux, my second gpu is eager for some action.

I have been wanting to play around with this ever since Mantle ushered in the new API race. My work has left me with dozens of add in cards laying around crying out to be vulkanized.

Quoting: LeopardVulkan for some older titles would be nice , like Deus EX:MD , HITMAN and Shadow of Mordor.

but that costs money and i dont think, that they have this capacity

btw hitman has vulkan

They can do it , at least they did it for Mac with Metal.

If they don't want to invest so much , they can also take route of Wine+DXVK wrapped solution for their old titles.

I've never attempted a game of this nature as they always seemed a little too complicated and in-depth but I really enjoyed watching that play through and I'm tempted. Can anyone recommend a game of this type to "cut my teeth on", so to speak. Something more beginner orientated maybe?

I probably own a few of them already!

:O

RX 550, 60 fps in Mad Max, 1080p, medium??
Dude, I find that somewhat hard to believe... but I'll take your word for it. Accepting those numbers as correct, I'd say the performance will be fine in Linux with Mesa (although there isn't much actual performance to begin with in this little runt of a card. :P)

The RX 550 is about as powerful as a handful of pocket lint. Comparable to the pathetic GTX 1030. Very low end cards, to call them 'gaming cards' would be extremely generous... but hey, if it runs, it runs, right?

I have a low profile RX 550 myself in a tiny HP machine so I'm allowed to sh*t on this card.

I suppose it depends on where you measure the fps. Get 55 to 60 driving through the empty desert looks nice, but it can still drop to 15 inside the camps.

Hitman would deserve a Vulkan version. Now it runs kind of bad sadly.

Quoting: kibblesProton came out and I only had about two games to test it with since I only buy linux native ports. Luckily one of them was DOOM, just couldn't pass that one up. I waited and waited for feral to port it and finally caved. Great game, feral really missed some sweet sweet $ with that one...

It's not like Feral can just say to them that they are going to do that. They need permission. And this is Bethesda, they'll never give it. And to show my support for their rigidity, I'll never buy anything that benefits them.

I think otherwise at that situation. Because of id Software.

Reasons :

1-) They made a great show with Vulkan on both Doom and Wolfenstein 2. They literally brought awareness from all sides.

2-) Historically , id Software is a great company. Even when all industry goes for MS Api's , they sticked to open graphics api's like OGL. And today with Vulkan.

3-) They are really Linux friendly actually but Bethesda won't let them to do that sadly.

So even my money goes to Bethesda , i know i can play id Software games with no performance impact on my Linux system thanks to their api choices. Also Valve will provide support for these titles. At least whitelisted ones.

didnt apple say, that they wouldnt support opengl anymore? so apple "forced" feral to make it metal
could be a reason

even if you only buy linux native games there are so many giveaways. humble throws out a lot of games. i remember i got tropico 4 and the ship murder party for free and both run on linux now

and i think it counts more for publishers, when they actually see you buy and play a win game with proton, than just wishlist it
