While it's not exactly clear what you will be able to do, it is at least clear now that Beholder 2 [Official Site] will be on Linux.

They weren't sure earlier in the year what was happening with a Linux version, however, a few hours ago they said this on their Steam forum:

Citizens! Beholder 2 will have Linux port at the very release!

I'm not too clear on what the actual gameplay will involve this time around, their Steam page didn't really explain much about the mechanics and their press kit didn't do a good job of this either.

How high will you climb the government career ladder of a totalitarian State?

You are a newly employed department officer within the Ministry of a totalitarian State. While you are poised to have an illustrious career and possibly become Prime Minister someday, the way up won't be easy. So, how high up the career ladder will you climb? The choice is still yours to make!

It seems the game will provide you with the opportunity to make a lot of choices, which will affect how it plays through. Hopefully we will know more by the release, otherwise we will take a look at it anyway to give it some thoughts.

The exact release date isn't yet clear. We do know it will be sometime later this year.

Hat tip to faceplanted.

Beholder devs and the devs of Orwell are some very kind folks and are friends and both their games sold fairly well on Linux though so I'm surprised to hear they weren't sure about putting the sequel on Linux.

Well at least good news it will not only release on Linux but will be released the same day than other OS...

We can't understate how important that is.

There is a demo of the game not sure how well it runs in Proton. Did a quick test. launches fine.

If they still rely on Unity and didn't change the plugins they use, the beta for Beholder 2 should be running just fine indeed.

I played whole demo. It works fine.

I've played demo for 10 minutes or so in Proton, seems to run just fine.

The demo works flawlessly in Proton. Tested it for a few hours, didn't encounter an issues at all. I'm glad they've chosen to make it native to Linux though. One thing that slightly disappointed me was hearing how some devs just gave up on the Linux version and decided to let it use Proton instead.

Well quite frankly its their loss there are now more and more dev teams willing to put in the effort our money will just go to them instead. Pushing for quality always pays off in the long run. So let's just reward those that are putting in the effort.

With so many people seemingly playing everything with Proton, I doubt both of that...

Well, I wouldn't buy it if it only ran in Proton. For free -- yeah, I can do that, but no Linux means no money from me unless it's part of some bundle with interesting Linux games in it.

Thing is for now most titles that are tested out and played around with in Proton are titles that have already released quite a while ago , or that has been gifted by friends or relatives. I didn't hear people say that they would start buying full price windows only titles because "well hey at least it somewhat works now" . Everybody knows proton is nothing more than Valve's version of Wine so it's an alternative yes but a messy one. An alternative where I won't pay full price for .

Unfortunately, I did, e.g. people advocating buying Shadow of the Tomb Raider, although it's very likely to be ported later.

I haven't bought a Windows game in 2013 until recently. I bought Doom because it's "officially" supported, and cheap, so it felt like a good way to test the official Proton support.

I also bought the Humble Monthly for Overwatch because I can't see "The Three Bees" (Blizzard, Bethesda, Bioware) ever supporting Linux directly, sadly. The Humble Monthly felt like a good way to get a decent game without supporting the concept of a Windows sale.

Beyond that, I can't imagine buying any titles based on Wine/Proton. I really, really want Nier:Automata, for example, but I won't touch it thanks to its DRM (Denuvo), despite its official status in Proton.
