Strategy game Sudden Strike 4 has another DLC today with the release of the Africa: Desert War expansion.

This new expansion has two "mini-campaigns" with six new singleplayer missions from the North African campaign of World War 2. Africa – Desert War introduces over 30 new vehicles including an all-new medical truck, the Marder II Tank Destroyer, the British Bishop SPG, as well as the Italian Semovente da 105/25 Assault Gun.

Despite the publisher telling us it would have cross-platform online play, it released without it. When told about it, they said they were looking into it and nothing was mentioned again with repeated attempts to contact them. When I asked about it again today, I was pointed towards this Steam forum post where a developer said this:

I am sorry to tell you that there will be no crossplattform multiplayer for SuS4. We looked at the requirements and it would require too much effort to get that working without lags and disconnects.

Such a shame, not really sure why "lags and disconnects" would suddenly be an issue but it might be a similar issue Feral Interactive have faced with some of their Linux ports.

That aside, it's still a pretty good strategy game. Not perfect by any stretch, but they've supported it well since release with a lot of new features and tweaks outside of DLC campaigns (which are quite good). If you're not particularly bothered by online play, it's easy enough to recommend.

Makes no sense to buy, when it is not crossplattform multiplayer :-(

That's an interesting way to say "We just developed the network code for one system and didn't know that this could lead to problems with cross platform multiplayer. Whooops, we should have seen this coming..."

Quoting: GuestSad, really.
I have no cross platform multiplayer on my CoH2 Linux native build but i have it with the CoH1, with no native version under proton !

Hmm, that leads me to the question, if it would work with proton and CoH2. I would like to play CoH2 with a friend of mine, but he is on Windows....

Drives are cheap. Buy one for your friend(s). Give them no excuses!

That's not really your opinion?!
Most of my friends don't want to use Linux. I will not get them on the nerves. I will just not buy this game...
BTW it is not a good marketing for Linux, to tell them what does not work.

So, how's Proton the compatibility of the Windows version? Has anyone tried it with proton_run?

It is my opinion. Why do you have to be the one to miss out or give in? Why can't they do you a favor sometimes and boot to Linux so they can play this game with you? Flip the table sometimes.
Linux to Linux works. I wouldn't say that's broken.

Sure, if your friends wouldn't ever consider doing you a favor and booting to a system they didn't prefer, then don't waste your money. My idea could work in other circles.

There are a lot of games where this isn't a problem, because the devs took care of it while developing the game. It was just ignored in this case, and now they realized they can't easily fix that - so they decided they don't.

Most Linux gamers also have their old Windows partition. I would just boot into that. Sounds way faster than multiple other people installing Linux for just one game.

It would be awesome if they want to try out Linux, but guilt tripping them into doing that doesn't sound like a good first time experience to me.

If your friends are Linux admins by day, then guilt tripping is OK.
