Originally published by Square Enix and developed by Eidos-Montréal, Feral Interactive confirmed today that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is officially heading to Linux in 2019.
Making sure we have the full experience, with Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider already ported to Linux by Feral this is really quite exciting news! I've no doubt it will be using the Vulkan API, as I'm sure people will be wondering.
This replaces the recent teaser put out earlier this month on the Feral port radar. So we now have Total War: WARHAMMER II arriving today plus Life is Strange 2, Total War: THREE KINGDOMS and Shadow of the Tomb Raider all heading to Linux. Feral sure are busy and that's good for us.
Check out the trailer:

From the press release:
In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara must master a vibrant jungle, overcome challenging tombs, and persevere through her darkest hour. As she races to save the world from a Maya apocalypse, Lara will be forged into the Tomb Raider® she is destined to be.
Lara's quest will take her from the bustling Mexican town of Cozumel to the dark heart of the Peruvian jungle where the hidden city of Paititi awaits. She'll navigate complex underwater caverns, traverse spectacular landscapes, and discover challenging tombs filled with traps.
Outnumbered and outgunned by Trinity, Lara must become one with the jungle and instill fear in her enemies through using mud as camouflage, disappearing into jungle vines or striking from above while perched in the canopy.
Let's hope for an early 2019 release. The longer they wait, the more likely it is they will lose sales from Steam Play. I mentioned before in a comment, that their timing will make or break future ports. I'm hoping for many more Feral ports in the years to come, having officially supported ports is great.
We will share more details closer to release and do our usual port report and review.
I might actually get this. I was not a fan of the reboot nor Rise of the Tomb Raider, mainly because they were 90% murder simulator and 10% actual raiding of tombs, and I would much rather the ratio was reversed. However, I have heard that while Lara still goes on a ridiculous murdering spree in this game, at least there is a lot more exploration and tomb raiding, which is my jam.
Now port HITMAN 2 (actual murder simulator), please. Pretty please.
Made me laugh
Proton already works fine with this
For now, I will only buy properly ported games. Proton is a nice thing to have, for the games in my library that will never see a official port. I'm not giving my money to companies that ignores the Linux market.

its good to support the native port
but proton is very good for us, it will be able to play every single game on steam soon thx to DXVK with dx10 and 11 Vk9 if it get games running soon And dgVoodoo
So i rather they work hard on the Proton which will show dev that people are gaming on linux and adapt to Vulkan API which is 1 more step closer to linux support or multi-platform
i get where you are coming from
but proton is the way to go and the first step to getting many off of windows

I think they don't want a whole lot of people buying the game during the Christmas
season. As for me, I'd rather give my money to Feral which means I'll wait.
True love is worth the wait.
waste of a port

So let me get this straight. You're saying that "they" (Feral???) should work on Proton INSTEAD OF this native port (or ANY native port, for that matter!), in order to make Proton more robust, which you say will [eventually] help Linux get more support (meaning... native ports???)... Just. What.

Ironically, the whole point of HITMAN is to kill as few people as possible. While you can achieve your objective in any way you see fit, in order to get a silent assassin rating and the highest score possible, you have to kill the target(s) and ONLY the target(s). The game actively punishes you for killing anyone else. So while HITMAN is absolutely a game about murdering people, I mean, you play an assassin, it's a game where the best score is attainable by killing as few people as possible.I might actually get this. I was not a fan of the reboot nor Rise of the Tomb Raider, mainly because they were 90% murder simulator and 10% actual raiding of tombs, and I would much rather the ratio was reversed. Compare that to Tomb Raider 2013 where Lara murders roughly 500 Russians. She then comes back and kills another 500 Russians in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Lara must really hate Russians. Her bloodlust for Russian blood is insatiable. :O
Lara is a far more prolific, albeit less stylish, killer than Agent 47, and she's supposed to be an archeologist.

Another guaranteed sale for them. I'll grab this soon as I can.Bingo. Feral's ports are specifically tweaked directly to run as good as they can possibly do it on Linux in the time they have. Quite different to Proton, which has such a big target I would be surprised if a Feral port ever performed worse than DXVK with Steam Play.
To those saying "Proton": well, you know, it doesn't work for everyone. And it actually doesn't perform as well as the native ports for everyone - while I may be in the minority (even within the overall few percentage that is GNU/Linux gaming), I do get better performance from native, broadly speaking. And that's true for basically everything I've tried - The Witcher 2 (yes, I know, but eON ran better than wine), Dawn of War II series (I played them through wine before Feral ported them, but the Feral ports run _much_ better), Rise of the Tomb Raider, and others. Considering my aging hardware, this is really important for me: Feral's ports I can play, "Proton" variants I cannot for more demanding games.
So yeah, native from Feral absolutely worth it as far as I'm concerned.
Like the previous Tomb Raider, Alex from Feral mentioned somewhere on Reddit how he re-did a bunch of the actual renderer for better Linux performance. That's the kind of effort I never want to see leave Linux gaming.
It's not just that though, it's the actual support you get as a customer that's important.
Still, Steam Play absolutely for me for games that are multiple years old and likely to never be ported.
For now, I will only buy properly ported games. Proton is a nice thing to have, for the games in my library that will never see a official port. I'm not giving my money to companies that ignores the Linux market.

I have similar opinion with the qualifier that I will purchase a game that runs on proton once it is heavily reduced and the chance of a port has all but passed (1-2yrs after release). For a full price purchase from me it needs to be a proper Linux port, be that inhouse or externally with the likes of Feral I dont mind.

Yes another useless port that we can play on Proton cause even the creator of DXVK is optimizing it on almost every dxvk update he does
i rather a fighting games like tekken or dragon ball fighterz or even soul calibur 6
mmorpg like world of warcraft, Destiny 2, if blizzard allows them the chance
you know something with long valuse even pugb, fortnite hey FIFA 19
arnt you tired of
Tomb Raider Hitman Desus EX those are not gonna get me off of Windows
I play fighting games mmorpg and sports games i know its not all about what i want, and its not about what you want, its what we all want and they should Hold port votes
Cause if i see another warhammer port from FERAL im gonna go crazy
I hope they can do Dirt Rally 2 port also and please closer to release :)Didn't even know about Dirt Rally 2!
I would also add Middle-earth: Shadow of War. It's been some time…
Lara is a far more prolific, albeit less stylish, killer than Agent 47, and she's supposed to be an archeologist.
In Lara's defense, while she kills a lot, she kills to survive. You can hardly say that about Agent 47, who does it for fun and money.

I made the odd joke about Feral releasing one Total War game after the other, too - but honestly, they have to work with people that allow them to port their games. I think Feral knows as well as we do that we'd prefer a few ports from publishers such as Bethesda, Blizzard or even EA, instead of adding yet another TW game to the already substantial collection. But that's not going to happen anywhere outsides of our dreams. There is absolutely nothing that will convince any of the aforementioned publishers to release a Linux port. They not only don't care about Linux, they actively loathe it and have said so.
Realistically, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is probably the best choice we could have hoped for.

True everything you said is correct
Thats why im saying Proton and DXVK will get my support more than native ports, cause i can already play more that have been natively ported yes they are kinda buggy but some do run really really well, thats why Feral should give us a Voting system so they we dont get a million warhammer and square enix games
I agree 100% on what you said, but the category for people like me are just gonna stay on windows hating it because have no choice.
The fact that they don't care about linuxians playing their announced ports right now via Proton, suggest me that, indeed, they get a cut of Proton sales.
Like several others have already stated; I'll only consider buying "Proton/Steam Play" titles once they are "whitelisted", once there is virtually zero chanse of a native port and once they are old enough to be sold cheaply.
That won't change unless the whole "landscape" of linux gaming changes to full & perfect Proton compatibility at release for all new & recent games. Something I'm not expecting to see happening anytime soon.
waste of a port
Proton already works fine with this
This is how I see it;
A game that has a Linux version I would consider buying.
A game without Linux version I would not consider buying.
I don't want neither Wine, Proton or anything else of that sort in my Linux computer.
If a game company want my money they will have to make a Linux version of their game.
I think the right way to go is to encourage game companies to add Linux to their supported plattforms, and today, with modern frameworks in place, it isn't that much of a problem to build a game for multiple plattforms.
