Haemimont Games along with Paradox Interactive have released the Surviving Mars: Space Race expansion today and it's great.

Note: DLC key provided by TriplePoint PR.

The Surviving Mars: Space Race expansion expands the game in some rather interesting ways. One of the biggest obviously being the AI controlled colonies which are optional. Being able to trade with them, deal with distress calls and do covert ops against them has certainly added an interesting layer into the game. While I enjoyed the game anyway, this actually gives it a little bit more of a purpose outside of trying to stave off starvation and not get blown into tiny pieces by meteorites. It's interesting though, that this could pave the way for a full multiplayer feature, since they have things you can actually do with/against other colonies now. Although, you can't directly view AI colonies, only see them on the world map which is a bit of a shame.

There's also the free Gagarin content update which has released at the same time, which includes some interesting goals from each Sponsor. They each have their own special list of goals for you to achieve, which will give you rewards for completing them. For example, with the International Mars Mission sponsor, one such goal is to have a colonist born on Mars which will give you a bunch of supply pods for free. They're worth doing, but not essential.

Another fun free feature our planetary anomalies, which will require you to send a rocket stocked with Drones, Rovers or Colonists across Mars outside of your colony to investigate, they're pretty good too since they offer some pretty big rewards at times. There's also Supply Pods now which cost a bit more, but you don't need to wait for them to get prepped and so they're really good for an emergency situation and can end up saving your colony should the worst happen.

Bringing Surviving Mars closer to games like Stellaris, there's also now special events that will happen. The game was a little, how do I put it, empty? Empty is perhaps too harsh, it's hard to explain properly. I enjoyed the game in the initially released form, but it did feel lacking in places. Not so much now since there's around 250 events that will come up at various points throughout the game. Some good, some bad, some completely terrible and so it just makes the game a lot more fresh. Considering this was added in free, it's quite a surprise. It goes to show how much they care about the game I think.

I was actually having the game freeze up on me a few times in previous version, since I've put many hours into this latest update I haven't seen a single one so that's really welcome. The game has been running like an absolute dream on maximum settings, incredibly smooth and (as weird as it is to say this about Mars) it looks great too. On top of that, the Linux version got a fix for switching between fullscreen and windowed mode with the patch.

One thing to note, is that there's a few new keybinds and so I do suggest resetting them or checking them over as I had one or two that were doubled up.

As a whole, the game has changed quite dramatically with this expansion and free update. I liked it a lot before, now I absolutely love it. Even going with just the free update, it's so much more worthwhile playing! I'm very content with it and I plan to play a lot more in my own personal free time now.

This exciting expansion will be available from Humble StoreGOG and Steam. It's also having a free weekend on Steam.

I tried it yesterday due to the free weekend. It was a big download... about 4-5GB.

I was less than impressed and bored with it quite quickly. That surprised me because I am a fan of base builders. But, of course, your mileage may vary.

Ah, this is great. I did not know that there was a free weekend on Steam! I've been interested in Surviving Mars ever since it came out. A demo might make me buy it. w00t

Where did you find this 100 players information?
I opened that link and didn't find anything related to the O.S.

I didn't see any statistics per OS either.
Plus, I think there's a misunderstanding between players and owners.

The game has between 200k and 500k owners.
In the worst case, let's say there are 200 000 owners, with 1% of them being Linux. That already amounts to 2 000 Linux owners.

Look in the chart on that page. (you must enable javascript if you block it.)
The first chart is the number of players in the last week, the lower chart is the number of players since it was released.

That is total number of players, not broken by OS. Essentially, the last week, before the free weekend, only a few hundred players are playing it at any one time, windows, mac, and linux combined. Obviously, the free weekend has generated a bunch of people trying it. One thing to note is that this is only the number of people playing through steam right now... It does not include people who bought it through GOG or direct from Paradox, and probably does not include people playing it in offline mode.

It does not seem to be a very popular game. You can search for other titles on steam as well.

Other examples: (using the weekly average)
PUBG             - 414.7k
Rocket League    -  32.1k
Rimworld         -  13.8k
Factorio         -   6.9k
Don't Starve     -   5.3k
Prison Architech -   2.0k
Hollow Knight    -   1.9k
Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition - 450
Railway Empire   -     410
Hunie Pop        -     190

With the exception of PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS(used for comparison), all of the titles support native linux (and are in my library.) Except for HuniePop, all of the titles that average less then 1000 have mixed reviews.

While steamdb lists Surviving Mars as 1.4k average users, that is obviously distorted by the free weekend -- before it, user counts were only 309 to no more than 1.1k at any given time.

Of course there can be many factors to these results other than how popular they are including how old they are and how many people like that genre. (I should note that only Factorio is in Early Access, everything else has had a full release.)

Edit: Note to Liam: Above I used the code tag for formatting... In preview, this allowed me to not ignore whitespace and all the numbers lines up. But when posted it started to ignore white space. So you probably have a difference in your stylesheets or a missing PRE tag in HTML.

i didnt say OS. it is overall and they have to maintain the game for every OS

Huh, so I got an email from them on Thursday saying they'd send me a free key for the DLC because I'd pre-ordered it. Haven't seen any key from them though.

I had the same, but I checked the DLC box and saw it has installed.

Correct, it is installed! Sweet.

True, you didn't say OS, but the way it was formulated, one could have thought that you were refering to 100 players on Linux.
But I stick with what I said, their ressources are not tied to how many people play it per week, but to how many people bought the game.

And on this, we have between 200k and 500k owners. That's really not bad I think. Not on par with the biggest, but still.
and the amount of resources you need to have Linux support possibly depends a lot on your approach and your base engine. If they are using a cross-platform engine, then it's possibly simpler.

That being said, it's true that games like RUST (between 5 and 10 million owners, so like 15 times what Surviving Mars has, could possibly support Linux, if they wanted to.
