Love your Doom mods? Total Chaos is a total conversion for Doom 2 which puts you on a remote island known as Fort Oasis in a survival horror setting.

Total Chaos is a total conversion mod for Doom 2 that runs on the GZDoom source port. The mod is a survival horror set on a remote island known as Fort Oasis. The island was once run by a community of coal miners which one day suddenly disappeared, leaving behind the abandoned concrete jungle to waste away.

Something, clearly, has gone very wrong with this place. Upon your arrival at Fort Oasis, you receive a strange radio transmission. Someone wants to he found. Survive in 6 chapters, against over 8 horrifying fiends with a large assortment of weapons. The mod with the assistance of the source ports introduces many new graphical features, including 3D models and high resolution textures. You will need Doom 2 to be able to play the mod, along with the latest version of GZDoom.

You will need an install of GZDoom found here and then place the files downloaded for Total Chaos from Mod DB inside "/home/user/.config/gzdoom" (I put them inside a folder named total, to keep it clean). You will also need Freedoom placed inside the gzdoom folder mentioned. Once done, run it like so easily from terminal:

gzdoom -iwad freedoom2.wad -file /total/totalchaos.pk3

My heart was absolutely pounding while playing it, the atmosphere they've managed to create is pretty fierce. Not just that, it actually looks really damn good too, surprising what they've been able to do with it. Honestly, it's better than quite a lot of commercial games I was absolutely terrified in multiple parts of it.

Put some headphones on and turn the volume up, close the curtains and prepare some spare pants. Brilliant, do check it out.

Calling this a "Total conversion for Doom 2" is a bit silly. There is not a single thing in this game that can be rendered by the original Doom 2 engine.

Yeah, I think developers need to work out a new way to describe such things. What would you suggest exactly?

At the end of the video it says the game needs the doom2.wad to play.

I think, technically, GZDoom is more a FPS-focused game engine. As such, this would be more of a "Game built on a retro-fps inspired engine"? Or... "Game using a modernized Doom 2 engine"?

I'm actually curious... is GZDoom free of the original Doom engine source restrictions? That is, could someone make a full game using GZDoom and legally attempt to sell it? I mean, there's Ion Maiden being sold that's based on the old Build engine (Duke 3D), so, there's no reason to think that a game on an old engine isn't a viable sell these days.

How about calling these total conversion full mod projects using modern engines something like... it's not a Doom MOD, it's a Doom MERD... ModernizedEngineRemakingDoom.

It's terrible, sorry. Almost derpy.

The Doom engine has not carried a no commercial use clause since the licensed it under GPL. There have already been sold product based off of GZDoom, for one thing there was a limited edition release of Action Doom 2 you could get that came on DVD with a few goodies like a poster.

That looks bloody amazing.
Like most people here i am impressed with what they did , looks as far removed from Doom 2 as my ass is from Venus.
Also wondering if they did not use any levels or sprites, what is tying them to the Doom2.wad file ?
Couldn't they use the open.wad file ? Really curios about this one.
Any case , know what I'll be doing this weekend. :D

Downloaded and tried the merd, 2.6 GB :D
Not my cup of tea but very eerie and impressive. Huge thumbs up to the team working on this!

Downloaded and tried after a long time planning to.
Got to say it lags like nobodies business at times.
Wondering what I did wrong or how to tweak it :(
