For those who like to guzzle a glass of the good stuff, Wine 4.0 just got the first release candidate. This also marks the start of the code freeze, the period where they stop working on implementing lots of fancy new features and work out all the kinks to have a stable final release.

Here's the highlights:

  • Preloader implemented on mac OS.
  • Mouse cursor support on Android.
  • Updates to the timezone database.
  • Vulkan support updated to the latest spec.
  • Stream I/O support in WebServices.
  • Better palette support in WindowsCodecs.
  • Synchronization objects support for kernel drivers.
  • Various bug fixes.

Talking about bug fixes, they've noted 43 marked as solved. As always to make sure this is clear, not all bugs were actually solved in this release. Some are older bugs only now being checked over.

As for what is sorted now, issues were solved with game such as Hitman: Absolution, Murdered: Soul Suspect, Guild Wars 2, Dragon Age: Inquisition and plenty more. See that and all the rest on the release announcement.

Wine has made some ridiculous strides this year, it has been a really quite amazing year for the project. Can't wait to see how it progresses in 2019 and beyond. Cheers to the Wine team!

Curiously same seetings on steamplay using dx9 produce batman grey knight :P but same settings on wine with dxvk (steamplay with dxvk dont work in test) shows the dark knight

It's really amazing how WINE has progressed from "that nerd tool that can make ancient games run on Linux, with a lot of tinkering and a healthy portion of luck" to "will run pretty much anything in Linux, no matter what" in about just one year.

I followed WINE for a long, long time, and I have never considered it an alternative to dual-booting, until about that one year ago when the project seemed to have gone to warp speed all out of a sudden.

Not that I'm trying to undermine Wine 's progress, but it's DXVK that has been the major wine-gaming breakthrough, allowing us to play a lot of the modern titles (and at a lot better performance than wined3d).

I just hope VKD3D makes enough progress to run Cyberpunk 2077 when it releases (knowing CD Projekt, the game is probably going to be DX12 only).

I'm now playing The Witcher 3 via SteamPlay, and Cyberpunk 2077 is the game I'm most eagerly awaiting to play (being a huge fan of CD Project 's games, and the whole cyberpunk genre).

The witcher 3 works with vanilla Wine as well. Only the hair effect is buggy but hardly anyone uses it.

I Doubt CD Project are going to use DX12 That API is Garbage at its best and to risk so many bugs with it, they are gonna go Vulkan or prob DX11 and DX12, if they do DX 12 many people will have to upgrade to Windows 10 just to play.

It's highly unlikely that they'd go 'DX12 only', considering that they're releasing for the PS4 as well.

Not owning any of those games I cant give you any direct help, but if you run the games the review the wine log to see what errors are thrown up. Will give you a clue to what features are missing and need to be implemented by the WINE team or if your lucky maybe its something you just need to install with winetricks.

Denuvo DRM protection is likely the culprit as Wine has no support for it.

You forgot to add on beginning of your statement: "I have no knowledge at all, but in my personal opinion". Denuvo DRM as itself could work via wine/Steam Proton.

Sorry for harsh statement, but this "cannot play Denuvo games on Linux" myth is very often spread on many places. It is not good advert for Linux gaming, because it consolidate opinion that "cannot play "fresh" Windows only AAA games on Linux".
