Kingdom Two Crowns, the third in the Kingdom series released recently for Windows and Mac. It looked like we weren't getting it, but it's now confirmed to be coming.

In their new roadmap post on Reddit and Steam, under the "QoL #01 Update" (Quality of Life Update) they noted that they will add "Add SteamOS (Linux) Support". This update is due out sometime early next year.

This is really nice news, it's good to know they didn't give up on supporting Linux after all.

More about it:

In the award-winning Kingdom series, players took on the role of a monarch struggling to build their kingdom up from nothing. Hundreds of thousands of players across the world explored, recruited loyal subjects, and defended nightly against the persistent threat of the Greed – but they did so in isolation, and as with all things in Kingdom, nothing lasts… until now.

Kingdom Two Crowns builds upon the challenging micro strategy experience with an evolution of the celebrated franchise. Introducing the brand-new campaign mode, monarchs must now work to build a kingdom that stands over time until finding a way to defeat the Greed for good. Recruit new unit types and develop advanced technologies to bolster your defenses. Explore fresh environments to discover new mounts and secrets hidden in the deep. Revisit and revitalize your kingdom in its entirety as you move onward through the campaign.

They didn't stop with introducing a new campaign mode, they also added co-op support both local and online so you can build together this time. That alone, makes it a lot more tempting to me personally.

I wasn't a big fan of the original Kingdom but after trying out the improved New Lands edition recently it firmly changed my mind, so I can't wait to dive into Two Crowns.

Hat tip to Przmk.

I am glad they either changed their mind or clarified the matter of Linux version. Thanks Raw Fury! :D

Thanks for following up on this, Liam. I'm glad the third Kingdom installment will be coming to Linux. Two Crowns looks even better than New Lands in the playthroughs I've seen.

I liked the first game, but found that once I started destorying portals the difficulty ramped up fast and it didn't seem to matter how many fortifications I made. So eventually I just gave up on it. Got the second game in a bundle, but haven't actually played it. Guess I should, if it's that big an improvement.

Alas, the damage has already been done to the PR of this developer with the Linux community.

Who wants to give her/his money to a developer that is quick to dismiss the byuer just because it randomly wants to do so? What about future entries in the series? Will the developer decide to support or not based on our behavior (like, how often we complain, what attitude do we have when we are doing so)?

I would rather we didn't create a witch hunt with such things. They're doing Linux support now, as they said and we should remain happy and polite.

I assume their community manager was just having an off-day, although looking at the context the user they were replying to did join the discord and share a Reddit post in it about people not buying their games - they didn't help themselves and it was a bit of an ass thing to do in the developers official discord channel. If I was on the team, I would have been annoyed by that too.

Edit: Edited after looking up the context of it.

Glad that its finally coming to Linux! I was dismayed a few days ago when I read that it wasn't coming. Kingdom is unlike any other games I played before and I am a big fan. That and the pixel art and effects are gorgeous. I've got my tux buxs ready!

Quoting: liamdaweI would rather we didn't create a witch hunt with such things, there's a lot of problem with that picture and there's no context on what was said to them (I imagine it wasn't polite given the developer reply) and we all have our off-days.
Agree, it is a murky story indeed. I was not able to find that "tweet" (it was twitter, I believe. I may be wrong, though, as I'm not strong with these "social channels") or the "@Cinder" in question (who is that?).
But Gordon Van Dyke ("@GordonVanDyke") seemed irritated by the fact that Nick Shvelidze ("@libgrog") suggested fixing the bugs in "New Lands". It would appear that after seeing the word "Linux" @GordonVanDyke immediately concluded it is about compatibility issues while the original message had used the ambiguous word "bugs" (I didn't even see the game, let alone played it, but to me it was something about game engine problems rather than missing libs and difficulties with launching).

Quoting: liamdaweI don't personally see much wrong with what they said, let's not make an issue out of it.
Who "they"? @GordonVanDyke or "@Cinder"?

Quoting: liamdaweThey're doing Linux support now, as they said and we should remain happy and polite.
To be completely prescise, no, they don't. For now, at least. They have plans to support Linux with the "Patch #01" but plans can (and often do) change, as we know pretty well.

Quoting: liamdaweGiving someone any kind of grief over something as simple as that, is what can easily give us a bad name.
Yes, but there is one prooved™ solution to this: in order to not be disappointed, one simply needs not to get passionate over something in the first place.
I'd rather not give people false hopes.

Quoting: liamdaweLet's not.
Let's not. :D

Everything has context, if you're going to tell a developer to "fix bugs" then be as helpful as you can. Just throwing that out at a developer, is obviously going to get a comparable response. People following it up with comments like "ignorance and arrogance at its best" to the developer is incredibly stupid. I'm growing very tired of some of the attitudes people throw at developers and then create an issue out of it to spread here or on Reddit. Stop that shit now.

Like I said, don't start a witch hunt. I will be deleting any further replies trying to keep that going. Use your brain.
