Rocket League, the insanely addictive rocket-powered sports game from Psyonix, Inc. has a few important tweaks released along with the second Rocket Pass.

Firstly, let's quickly go over the progression changes. They're not overly dramatic, but there's some nice differences. From now, every time you touch the ball you will get two points (limited to one per second), the win bonus was doubled from 50 to 100, the Weekly Win Bonus was expanded from two to three games along with a max per week going up from 14 to 21 wins. On top of that, placement matches now count towards your Bronze Season Reward Level which is a nice tweak.

Additionally, they've finally added some leaderboards for the new Ranked modes and there's also plenty of bug fixes that have come in this month.

For those interested, the second Rocket Pass is now live which runs from December 10th, 2018 to March 18th, 2019. You can see more info on the new Rocket Pass and the contents here. I much prefer this pass system to loot crates, since you know exactly what you're getting and it's quite fun levelling up to get more customisation items. I hope they continue to tweak and expand it and eventually get rid of loot crates completely.

You still earn free items without purchasing a Rocket Pass, so it's not required to earn anything. Personally, I see it as a nice way for dedicated players to give back to a game they've put hundreds of hours into to keep development going.

Now is a good time to grab it, I hear some whispers that some festive GamingOnLinux tournaments might be coming up…

You can find it on Humble Store (on sale - 50% off) and Steam.

Personally, I see it as a micro-transaction that has no place being in a paid game, but eh, whatever floats your boat. Or in this case, flies your rocket car.

This is a bad idea, way to many people already make it their only goal to smack the ball.

They need to keep the servers up somehow, pay employees etc. I completely understand the hate for loot boxes because of the addiction factor, but this is not randomized. They need to make money somehow. Can't keep updating the game for free.

<<rant about how i love this game, but don't play it anymore>>

Rocket Pass is one thing i disliked mostly from this game. Not here to tell how bad this game is, i played it for about 800 hours, so it wouldn't be true. But i don't feel this game anymore and Rocket Pass wasn't helping at all.

First of all Rocket Pass is a trick to be even more gloryhunter or hardcore winner. You win, you get more points. You get more points, you get more prizes. There's no place for "empty-head" gameplay and non-binding chat anymore.
Another trick: if you wanna get enough levels (and prizes), you would have to play it hell-of-a-time. I don't know how much nolifer you have to be to get all what you've bought for that 10 euros. I tried to reach some good stuff, but after several weeks i started to hate this game and stopped playing.
So it's really more like paying a tip for game's creators, not something useful for a player.

Second, at some point game starts to be too hard for a simple player, who enjoys playing it after work. I'm not playing this game for training, being professional, to win tournaments or make the best freestyle shot ever for youtube. I'm here to play game for like half an hour and relax before going to sleep.
I've got rocketeer level with mentality and gameplay skills of ~veteran. Just because i have played much games online, not in training screen, my skill doesn't match other's in my level. What do i get? Everybody's flying around and getting own me/my team. Do i feel like enterntaining? I doubt that. I feel sorry for other teammates, just because i don't care if i miss some simple ball, or don't take the ball when i'm supposed to do that.
Actually, my son stopped playing RL even earlier than me with much better gaming skills, training, results and ~1500 hours of gameplay. When i asked him why, he told: because of tryhards. Rocketpass=tryhards.

Correct me if i'm seeing things, but they sell DLC on a regular basis, as well as lootbox keys. The revenue appears to be enough. They were bandwagon chasing, nothing more.

I still disagree with comments against the Rocket Pass. I'm more of a casual player, but I quite like it. I absolutely prefer it to buying a loot box where you've no idea what you're going to get any time you open one. After 200+ hours played online, I'm happy to continue to support a developer of a good game if/when I feel like it with a pass.

Quoting: GuestThey could make Rocket League 2, on Unreal Engine 4

I think you're right and you're wrong; RL is too big and successful to make RL2, you'd end up splitting the playerbase for what is essentially only a graphics update, because the gameplay would remain the same.

However, if you permit some personal speculation and conjecture (there is absolutely no facts to back up what I'm saying), I do believe that they are probably currently in the process of bolting RL onto UE4, and will eventually just release a big UE4 transition patch. When they ported RL to the switch, the switch had no support for UE3 at all, and they had to do a lot of manual retrofitting for it to run. UE4 runs fine on the switch, so it makes sense to assume that they incorporated at least elements of UE4. So they put in all this work, so why stop there? Why not just continue and do a full on UE4 conversion, this would future-proof RL as well, graphically. So that's my theory, and my hope, a nice vulkan backend for RL =)

I don't know, seems like developers can do what they want, there are always people ranting about it.
You now have the rocket pass, which is optional and no loot box system. People cry it's no successor.
Also in the Stellaris comments recently. The make a DLC, people are crying DLCs are overpriced and change the game everytime.
If you want to buy a new title every year of the same game, go ahead by Assasins Creed, Call of Duty and Fifa but I am happy if my games are still supported by the developer with free patches and optional content to buy.

Also, you get your keys back if you progress enough through the Rocket Pass. I would have bought the keys anyways. So really it's just more stuff for me, at no extra cost.
