It's that time of the year again, Steam are now doing their own Winter Sale and there's obviously a lot of cheap games available for Linux.

Here's a few picks of my own, games that I know run reasonably well on Linux while also being on sale:

  • Rocket League - I reserve my right to talk about Rocket League any time. It's hooked me like no other game has been able to since the release of Dota 2 and it's my absolute favourite game in the world right now. You can also get involved in some of our tournaments!
  • Surviving Mars - A city-builder with a difference, can you tame the barren wasteland of Mars and build a thriving colony? Even better with the recent expansion!
  • Opus Magnum - The puzzle game that made me fall in love with Zachtronics. Build machines, watch them work and then make them even better.
  • DiRT Rally - One of the few good rally games to be available on Linux, ported by Feral Interactive it's a beautiful game. Difficult but still worth a look if you still haven't.
  • Dead Cells - Easily one of the best games released this year. Tough combat, absolutely gorgeous art and certainly addictive to push through one more run.
  • BATTLETECH - Massive mech units smashing each other to pieces, what's not to love about that? Linux version still classed as a beta, but it does work rather swimmingly.
  • Prison Architect - Building the best and most secure prison in the world just got more fun with money off. Even better, it just gained multiplayer support.

For those who want to try out Steam Play, remember to take a look at ProtonDB first before deciding. While user-reports should always be taken with a pinch of salt, they're at least a reasonable indicator of what to expect.

Valve are also giving out some free stuff each day at the Cozy Cottage. You will get things like profile backgrounds, emoticons, DLC for popular games and so on.

Whatever you decide to pick up, we hope you enjoy your new games. See more on Steam. If you just want to see want's available specifically for Linux while also on sale, hit this link.

As a reminder, the GOG Winter Sale is also still going and Humble Store are currently giving away LEGO Lord of the Rings free for 48 hours.

Wait what? Wasn't this last week? Is this a time anomaly?

Huh. Hidden Folks is 60% off on Steam but only 50% on Itch.io. I wonder why that is.

Similarly, Cross Code is 25% off on Steam but not on sale at all on Itch.

"Dead Cells - Easily one of the best games released this year. Tough combat, absolutely gorgeous art and certainly addictive to push through one more run."

Oh, really? Not one that I was looking at. Should I get this?

edit: hmm... dark souls 3 75% off. I might be evil and buy for proton.

If you guys like turn-based...
Just can't get into turned based gaming, I don't know why. I enjoy, say, chess but there's something that feels too unnatural and unpredictable about playing strategy gaming this way. I love RTS's... I wish it were different :(.

Steam is also having its "Game of the Year" awards.

There are a few linux related titles, Not much from what I am playing, but Klei (who supports native linux on many of its releases) made it to the finals, as well as Factorio for "Most fun with a machine" category.(which I highly recommend).

I got to say that I'm greatly disappointed by Steam sales and generally the direction gaming market has been going lately. Not so long ago, aged games were decently priced, indies were bundled together attractively and I was buying way more games than I needed. Good for me, good for the industry, win-win.

But then in their greed developers decided they want to sell Steam keys in bulk to third party stores, key swapping and reselling sites started eating into their revenue, so they now try to squeeze every last cent from their games, prices remain high for way too long, there are no more good bundles and I'm struggling to find a good deal in a Steam winter sale that in the past was easily leaving my wallet dry.

Honestly, I might as well go back to piracy. The whole point of digital game distribution was to provide us with fair value so we don't pirate games, like I quit Popcorn when Netflix came along. But people are ruining a good thing here by getting greedy.

Steam Sale is a dissappointment generally. There are so less discounts on games that i'm interested.

Don't go to the dark side.
Dead Cells is much better than the windows only game you intend to buy.

Double standards?

Aren't they decently priced now?!

Aren't you contradicting yourself here? You just said that they are selling their games cheap on reselling sites... but then you say games are to expensive.

No more good bundles? Check the Humble Monthly and the regular bundles... that's dirt cheap.

Honestly, I might as well go back to piracy. The whole point of digital game distribution was to provide us with fair value so we don't pirate games, like I quit Popcorn when Netflix came along. But people are ruining a good thing here by getting greedy.

Nope. What I liked I would always buy afterwards. Depending on how much I liked it, I might even buy it on smaller discount, get special editions, DLCs, etc. And I would make sure to promote good games as well.

But cheaper games meant I would risk getting more stuff, although I might end up not liking it. That meant I would get to try out more things, while industry gets more of my money overall, seems like a sweet deal for everyone. But now I see games that are over three years old cost 10+ euros on a Steam's biggest sale. Who does that benefit exactly? Whoever really wanted that game has bought it already, you're not generating any new sales with that strategy. Withholding art from people is wrong, developers should care to get their money, but also that their art is available to audiences.

Now, that's interesting. I was about to agree with everyone who's saying it's disappointing, because when I checked my wishlist at about 7.30GMT (after voting in the Awards, so yes, the sale had started) considerably less than half of it was discounted. But now almost everything is. Weird.

It usually takes time for the discounts to appear. Today I couldn't find anything discounted during the first minutes, even though some games were advertising their discounts on their game-images. After a while some of the games had discounts others didn't...and it took even longer for those discounts to fully appear in my wishlist..

Do not feed the Monkeys, Jazzpunk and Shenmue I & II... Hopefully the last games I buy in this 2018 xD

I would definitely recommend Pathfinder Kingmaker to any RPG fans, most problems have been fixed, and it's a massively addicting game.

I REALLY wanted a discount on RimWorld :(
Game is so expensive right now and publisher is so greedy not even giving a 10 or 20%.

Same for Factorio.
