The day I'm sure many have waited for has arrived, a new Steam Play beta has been officially released today which includes the important FAudio project. On top of that, even more titles have entered the Steam Play whitelist.

Don't know what the heck Steam Play is? The "too long; didn't read" is that it enables you to play a lot of Windows games on Linux.

Linux game porter Ethan Lee, one of the forces behind FAudio also created an "FAudio for Proton" page to read over to give you a lot more information on what it actually is and what it does. In short: more games should work, more games should work better and it may introduce new issues so keep an eye ear out.

First up, here's the changes for Proton 3.16-5 beta:

  • Completely new implementation of XAudio2, using the FAudio project. This should provide much higher quality audio for games that use XAudio2. Notably, this now supports volume mixing and audio effect processing features that were missing from the old implementation.
  • Better support for embedded Chromium-based web browsers. Games and launchers that contain an embedded web browser may now work better.
  • Update DXVK to 0.93. Also include a fix for some Unity VR games when run with DXVK, like SUPERHOT VR and Job Simulator.
  • Compatibility improvements for changing paths between Linux and Windows using the Steam API. Among other things, this should fix Steam Controller icon images in certain games.
  • Minor fixes for PulseAudio users with certain hardware.
  • For developers, optional support for Vagrant, which should ease the process of creating Proton build VMs.

The changelog for Steam Play's Proton can be found any time on the GitHub Wiki. To access it, you will likely need to re-start Steam for it to be picked up.

Additionally, Valve announced the whitelist was updated with 29 more titles that should "just work". These are:

  • 20XX
  • A Case of Distrust
  • Anime Dress Up
  • Apocalipsis
  • AstroPop Deluxe
  • Avernum 3: Ruined World
  • BEEP
  • Botanicula
  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Ultimate Edition
  • Crash Dive
  • Dragon Cliff
  • First Strike: Final Hour
  • Football Tactics & Glory
  • Infinos Gaiden
  • Long Gone Days
  • Mad Tower Tycoon
  • Meteor 60 Seconds!
  • Mushihimesama
  • O.C.D. - On Completeness & Dissonance
  • Objects in space
  • Puzzle Agent 2
  • Rusty Lake Hotel
  • Rusty Lake Paradise
  • Rusty Lake: Roots
  • SYMMETRY
  • Solstice
  • Stronghold HD
  • Subsurface Circular
  • Tactical Monsters Rumble Arena

The whitelist is there so that you can just install them like any other game. For games not on the whitelist that you wish to test, you can check the "Enable Steam Play for all titles" box in the Steam Play section of the Steam client settings.

And I thought this was going to be a pretty normal week…

Only unknown games in the whitelist, that’s disappointing.

Avernum's cool. Then again I like everything Spiderweb's put out.

Puzzle Agent 2, Stronghold HD and Botanicula are old, but not that unknown too.

Great to see the FAudio finally there though!

Although the Linux version of Botanicula is not on Steam, but it still exists. I would have preferred something that is not available in any way natively.

Good point.

I remember Amanita Design saying that they are working on a new engine (Twitter). Not 100 % sure, but I also remember they want to replace it also for the older games.

Wasn't Machinarium re-released with a new engine?

Maybe Liam can get back to them on that topic. :)

EDIT:

Oh yeah, Machinarium got a new engine last year and I remember saying them,
the want to support Linux again following that route.

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/06/22/machinarium-rebuild/

It's just that I haven't heard anything again.

Thanks 4 that.
Nezchan Dec 11, 2018
Avernum 3, but not the other games in the series? That's weird, especially given the low overhead of the games.

I can definitely say I haven't had problems with Avernum 5 or 6 via Proton and afaik all have a platinum rating.
legluondunet Dec 11, 2018
Happy to see new improvements for Proton. As soon Proton will know how to play wma/wmv, a lot of Windows games could be whitelisted (Darksiders, Dark Souls, Age of Empire 2 HD, Final Fantasy XIV....)

Idk...Mushihimesama is pretty big news for Cave fans. Although I can vouch that all the Cave games on Steam work great. I see your point though.

After I did some testing, guess I'll repost what I originally posted on ProtonDB, for posterity:

Seems 3.16-5 is still not added to ProtonDB - quite a few games got some progress, including Elite: Dangerous (some, but not all fixes were merged), Dead Rising 3 and possiblyt others having audio now (but crashes), UE games not needing winetricks for audio to work properly (Red Orchestra 2 for example), 3D Mark starting (but can't get the actual tests to run), Just Survive and Just Survive Test Server launcher starting (but servers are dead) and my wife can play Dysan: The Shapeshifter now

I would LOVE to not have to reboot for Elite: Dangerous (I play it in VR). That is one of the few games I keep my Windows install around for.

Anyone tested to see if Lego Marvel superheroes 2 works correctly yet? It seems the audio is always missing one of it's sound channels or something, like the dialog works and music, but no explosions.

It doesn't. One Steam Play game update will grab the new Proton, all others are zero byte updates. Hopefully Valve will make it clearer eventually.

Might have been my fault somehow, but when i manually switched to the new proton beta version (was on the last stable one before) it wiped the games and started redownloading them completely.

I mean Cave games ending up on the white list is pretty big news for Shmupheads such as myself indeed.
And starting with Mushihimesama was thankfully the right choice to make.
Deathsmiles can wait (especially given that Degica is about to drop a micro patch so making a proton setup now would have been dumb ).

I just hope that all the Degica ports (not just the cave stuff) will eventually get on the whitelist.
