It appears we missed this one from December last year, vkQuake2 is Quake 2 amplified with Vulkan support.

Quake II was originally released in December of 1997, making this 21 year old game still see new project appear thanks to id Software releasing the source code under the GPL. vkQuake2 has been the hobby of Krzysztof Kondrak as announced on Twitter.

Firstly, it's worth noting that this version doesn't currently support Linux but it is firmly in their plans. vkQuake2 isn't just adding in Vulkan though as it also added support for newer screen resolutions; original compiler warnings have been fixed; the effects for lava, water and slime now get drawn properly with Vulkan; the software renderer was replaced with KolorSoft 1.1 to gain coloured lighting and fixes severe instabilities of the original renderer and so on.

Find vkQuake2 on GitHub.

I still remember playing this back on my 1997 supercomputer with its Voodoo 2 card. Try as I might, I could not get my new bride to play it with me. Twenty-one years later, she still won't play it with me.

Well, it is great indeed, but Quake 2 isn't so demanding to begin with. In fact, OpenGL based source ports like Yamagi Quake II limits framerate to a certain level as default to not to overuse CPU/GPU. Though, vkDOOM3 looks promising, yet it also isn't available for Linux at the moment...
