Entering my inbox recently was an update on the roadmap for X4: Foundations [Official Site], Linux is still in their plans but that date isn't too firm yet but we now have an idea of when it might be.

In December, Egosoft release their big 1.50 update which came with their first attempt at an online mode, which is a pretty huge thing. They're committed to further developing X4 as noted in the email from their PR team to us.

There will be a few minor updates, along with a huge 2.0 update in February, this will add in the "ability to compete with the faction shipyards by selling ships to the war factions or build your own fleets". Additionally, it's going to focus on making "crew training a bit easier.".

After that, is another big 2.5 update planned which will introduce a new Resupply Ship-type. It will also add in a "Sector blacklists" feature, to tell your ships to avoid at all costs along with improvements to inventory management.

While that all sounds good, what about Linux support? Well, here's what they noted in the email:

Linux version: The Linux beta can start somewhere between 2.0 and 2.50 already but at the latest together with this update.

So hopefully this means around February-March we will see a Linux beta.

Further out again, is another huge 3.0 update that will add in "the ability to dock directly at a station in a spacesuit and to get other NPC ships to transport you, by offering missions to them". The big 3.0 update will also add in "a number of new and improved combat missions" and so on.

They say that each major update, is also going to expand the online mode even more which sounds rather exciting!

Finally, a full expansion is planned that will introduce the "Split race, their ships, a new Split economy and of course a large new area of space shortly after releasing 3.0".

So... is it coming before or after 2026? :S:

waiting is not such a issue since people are saying that X4 still needs some polish and balance etc..

Just had to say nice avatar. The irony is not lost on me! =)

These are great games but always launch incredibly rough. X3 wasn't truly good until patch 4.0 shipped a few years after release. I don't mind waiting a little longer.

I'm glad Egosoft continues to support Linux, and supports all their games for the long term.

Nice. I hope they work out all the kinks I saw streamers run into on Windows release day. I'm excited for this news.

oh, this has me so excited!
I've got the game and love it I just hate rebooting to windows for it.

applying windows update 1 of 300 and then I've lost either the desire to play or time with my 14month of daughter waking up again.

I'll buy this game.

Egosoft has always been very nice in supporting Linux (thanks timon) and their games in general. And I love this kind of games. ^_^

Just a shame they are not building multiplatform by default, since X4 does not seem to be playable under wine.

Which is a good thing since X games get significantly better with age and you won't feel tempted to spoil your experience before that :-D

They made the early decision to be Vulkan only, that to be multiplatform.

This! <3

I'm waiting for the release! I think it's good that the release is later since the game seems to be a bug fest at the moment.

Great news since I already have the game. Looking forward to play it.

Ha, is it bad that I didn't even know this game was out because I hadn't seen the 'out for Linux'. So here's my question... will this somehow replace Elite: Dangerous for me so I can fly in space in VR under Linux?

Yes! Because that means you haven't paid enough attention to GoL. :D

X4 is non VR.

Otherwise, though, I'm incredibly excited about this title. Reviews, even with bugs, have been terrific.

Hmm... Helium Rain or X4?

Both! They're actually very different games, both excellent in their own way.

That's the exact opposite from what I've been reading on forums

Reading the views of people with proper game time has made the pain waiting even worse.

I actually think both are true. With light gameplay, it's pretty flawless, but the deeper you get in, and the more complex your empire, I think problems crop up. So, again, waiting probably isn't so bad, especially since apparently more multiplayer options are coming...

Pfff, the X series seems so incredibly cool to play, so that's why I have all the linux versions.
Just to play them...
I really must sit down and try it some time...
The biggest space game I've ever playes was freespace 2. But that was awesome.
(not counting no man's sky as a space game)

To be fair, my brain probably was thinking "it's not out for Linux yet, will wait." and that translated into "it's not out."
