The first Wine development build of this year, as well as being the first build towards Wine 5.0 is now out.

Announcing the release last night, Wine's Alexandre Julliard noted these improvements coming with Wine 4.1:

  • Support for NT kernel spinlocks.
  • Better glyph positioning in DirectWrite.
  • More accurate reporting of CPU information.
  • Context handle fixes in the IDL compiler.
  • Preloader fixes on macOS.
  • Various bug fixes.

With the bug fixes, they noted 30 in total being squashed. These include issues solved with GOG Galaxy, Gas Guzzlers Combat Carnage, Empire Earth and more. As usual though, some bugs were fixed previously and only seeing a status update now.

See the full release announcement here.

That didn't take them long! :D

As for my hopes for the 4.x series, well, I don't have a specific feature I am wishing for, but I hope they can further improve WINE so it will run even MORE Windows games out of the box at the end of the year, even newer ones. I guess a particular area that needs attention is getting these intrusive dumbass DRM systems (*looks at Denuvo*) to work that currently prevent some games to run in WINE that otherwise would.

Uh oh. I really hope it's not an instant regression from 4.0. As soon as 4.1 staging lands in Arch (or in Lutris, I guess), I'll test. I've been playing it a lot lately ever since it got fixed.

Alright so, I've upgraded and it still runs for me. Arch, Nvidia, Wine Staging 4.1, a clean 64 bit prefix with mono, using Knyazev's launcher.
