Sounds like Geneshift is going in a good direction, with the latest update now out for this 2D GTA-inspired Battle Royale game.

Firstly, for those who don't own the "Complete Edition" DLC which contains the single-player and co-op campaign mode, all additional online PvP modes can now be accessed including Conquest, Extraction, Checkpoint Racing, Deathmatch and Zombie Survival. They say they've done this, as there wasn't enough players to have such online modes behind a DLC—fair enough, can't argue with such a sane decision.

For a bit of extra fun, it now has Quake-inspired jump pads:

Apparently a lot of people got stuck on levels or got confused, with the shrinking zone in the BR mode adding in a quick way to get around (outside of vehicles) is pretty interesting and they look quite amusing in action when people are firing at you.

The XP system for levelling up also went through an overhaul to allow more experimentation with skills, there's a newbie checklist mini-tutorial for the BR mode to help avoid some confusion and a bunch of balacing changes. Full update notes here.

For future versions, the developer said they're working on "reworking the skills system and adding more depth and strategic territory control to the Battle Royale mode" which sounds interesting. Currently, the skill system does seem like it needs some streamlining for sure.

Honestly, it's a great game. The Battle Royale is amusing and the campaign is really fun too, so don't knock it 'till you try it.

You can grab it on Humble Store and Steam.

I played a bit of the f2p online mode, and it is pretty fun. My main complaint would be the low amount of players, generally I only played with 2 or 3 other humans. As there are bots you can still have fun, but I would recommend to bring some friends.
