Thanks to the great work from Tyler McVicker of Valve News Network, we've learned that a lot of changes seem to be on the way for Valve's card game Artifact.

Honestly, the changes sound absolutely massive, far bigger than I expected Valve to be doing and it sounds like (if most of it is true) that it could seriously change the game for the better and give it the resurgence it needs. As I wrote about recently, Artifact has been bleeding players like mad and it's still continuing with it reaching new lows.

Here's the video (notes below):

Bullet point notes about what could be coming based on the details found:

  • A possible port to Unity to have it on mobile, how likely this actually is I've no idea. The files they showed might not be referring to the Unity game engine but unity builds instead.
  • A single-player story-based puzzle mode campaign, which you seem to be able to access right now (details in the video description).
  • Mutations, a new set of cards.
  • Major rule changes, which could be new game modes like playing hero cards directly from your hand.
  • Board and IMP customisation.

If the majority of this turns out to be true, it all sounds pretty good. A campaign with around 100 puzzle battles to solve that links into Dota 2 lore could be very interesting. Will it all be enough though? It will be interesting to follow.

You can find Artifact on Steam.

The puzzles and the solo campaign idea is what the game was sorely lacking.

Not in and of themselves but in terms of diversity of play , of palate cleanser between rounds of getting your ass kicked online.

A possible port to Unity to have it on mobile (...)

That is quite silly as they have already successfully tested Source 2 on Android!

I agree, given the info I don't think VNN is right on that point.

Lets be honest, online-focused trading card games (TCG) need to be F2P. Better I buy and play the physically real trading card for example, Pokemon TCG which will become collectable item/future classic in the future, can trade freely and etc., rather than buy a virtual TCG with some/many restriction cause it's a virtual game card.

For comparison:
Pokemon TCG Starter Deck = RM 75-120 (vary, based on card quantity)
Artifact = RM85 (pricier than US (RM81.88), very rare for our Steam region)

I suspect the real problem here is the pricing model; I think people just aren't willing to spend this kind of money on a game like this.

It's good to see Valve's comitment despite the bad start.

Valve. Can you make a proper game too please? Seriously it's been a long time, we want a proper AAA Valve game. :<

I think this was been discussed long enough. Many people like card games. It doesn't matter that you (and me) don't.

I'm so not into card games that it's ridiculous. Yet I really want to try out valve's take on tcgs. Ugh... soon lol.

Well, he only showed all the Unity stuff that's in the update. There also was a picture of something on Twitter on his Feed, but that seems to have been deleted.

Lol, it's not just you two, obviously LOTS of gamers would LOVE to see HL3, P3, L4D3, etc. You are definitely not alone, Valve is just being lazy, fat, and rich.
I love Artifact and I also like the other Valve games. Especially CSGO and Portal. For me, one doesn't exclude the other. Valve will deliver more. Probably in VR and probably not in the near future.

Actually, I never played Half-Life (the very first failed in matters of physics in the first minutes so I stopped), couldn't care less about L4D3 and doubt that Portal 3 could be any better than Portal Stories: MEL. I would play Portal 3 and HL3, but... I don't share the excitement of some people.

Well, apart from their VR games (and let's not forget the upcoming Half Life VR) and of course Artifact, "In the Valley of Gods" is also in development. They might not be putting out a new HL (non-VR at least), Portal or L4D any time soon, but I wouldn't quite say they're "lazy, fat" quite yet (rich, they likely are).
