ShilohGames, developer of the free multiplayer space shooter Allspace which released recently has now ported over their previous space shooter Disputed Space to Linux.

Always nice to see a developer port their previous games, it's not enough just to have the "latest and greatest" of course.

Unlike Allspace, Disputed Space actually offers up single-player and local co-op support. As the developer says:

Disputed Space is a fast-paced arcade action game, not a realistic simulator. It is a 6DOF game that plays like Descent or Overload, but in outer space instead of inside a mine. Players pilot a small fighter ship that can fly in any direction (including backwards) while blasting enemy ships with lasers and missiles.

Other Features:

  • First Person Space Shooter with Six degrees of freedom (6DoF)
  • Single player campaign with 30 levels
  • Pilot your ship by rapidly strafing, aiming, dodging, and shooting
  • Play as part of a large fleet
  • Fly in between large capital ships while dogfighting with fighters and bombers
  • Procedurally generated space scenes
  • Large battles with dozens of ships and thousands of projectiles
  • Arcade, Action, 3D SHMUP

Man, we need more space sims, X2/3 and Vega Strike alone aren't cutting it for me.

Revenge is a dish best served cold. It's very cold in space.

Are you serious, or were you joking ironically, as in, 'that's what the state of the Space Sim was in Linux in, like, 2012 and look how far we've come'? As a big space gamer, I can attest that the the state of the space sim is quite good in Linux right now and we have little out there we can't play. We have:

Native:
Allspace
Arc Savior (coming soon)
Astrokill
Disputed Space
Everspace
Freespace 1 and 2 via Openspace (and its mods like the Battlestar Galactica inspired Diaspora)
Helium Rain
Oolite
Overload (not really space, but I put Descent inspired shooters in this group)
Strike Suit Zero
X2/3/Rebirth (with the amazing X4 coming soon)

Windows titles via Proton or Wine that work:
Angels Fall First
Elite Dangerous
Eve Valkyrie
Executive Assault 2
Void Destroyer 1 and 2
I-War 1 and 2
Landinar Into the Void
House of the Dying Sun
Star Citizen
War Tech Fighters
XWing and XWvsTF classics

And that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. That's most of the recent and past all time genre greats. That's enough space gaming to play as a full time job, if you wished :). The only space title in Windows I can think of that doesn't work on Linux via Proton right now that I desire is Spacebourne (and I plan on reaching out to that dev since it's an Unreal 4 engine game, and most of those should work), that's about it...

Is Star Citizen actually installing via wine or do we still need to install in windows and copy the files over?
Because that would make my weekend!

Also some personal favorites:
Wine
Freelancer
Homeworld

And if you're into space flight you may be into atmospheric flight, then you get to add X-Plane, flightgear, Microsoft Flight simulator, IL-2 Sturmovik 1946, Sky Rogue, ... a ton of great games!
My #1 windows-only game that hasn't made it onto GNU/linux yet is DCS World due to the starforce DRM, haven't played it about 4 years now but there are plenty of other awesome games that work on linux and are therefore deserving of my money and attention.

It must have been around twenty years* since I played Descent when I ended up buying Overload, which piqued my interest again so that I discovered D1X-Rebirth and now I'm actually playing Descent again. I know the graphics are still a bit dated, but it still seems to pull me in just like before.

*(Not counting Descent 3, which I played for a while after the Loki release of it for Linux.)

Everspace uses a more traditional flight/combat simulator way of flying. The 6DoF method of control is a bit different. If you've never played one of the Descent games or another 6DoF game, you are in for a different experience. In some ways, it's more like first person shooter game mechanics than flight simulator game mechanics, but you move in three dimensions rather than two.

I did say "Space Sim", not "Space Shooter", didn't I? Don't get me wrong, I like Tachyon: The Fringe as much as the next guy, but there's a difference between "Shoot people in space" and "space sim". Although that is a big generalisation, so I should probably change it to "Space Sandbox". Also I don't count MMO's because there you just get trollololed into space dust.

Also also, lol X Rebirth, the black sheep of the series.
