Here's a rather nice tale to warm you up on a Monday. The developer behind Rise to Ruins has closed their Patreon account as they're doing so well, they're even paying back supporters.

Greetings guys, after some very, very careful consideration. I've decided to shut down the Patreon. The reason being Rise to Ruins easily sustains my livelihood and a nice rainy day account that can keep SixtyGig Games running through the hard times now, so I don't feel right taking additional money from you guys! Your support has and always will be appreciated and I thank you all for your pledges, reviews and of course, buying the game.

Rise to Ruins has been doing increasingly well over the last 6 months or so, and to return the thanks you gave me by pledging, I would like to return to you 2 times the amount you pledged to me since the Patreon began. Meaning, if you've pledged $10, I'll return $20!

Honestly, this is pretty amazing. Considering how plenty of indie developers are seriously struggling, it's good to see an example of one doing really well. It also goes to show what a great and honest developer SixtyGig Games are to do something like this. You can see their announcement here on Steam.

Currently, the game is sitting pretty with a "Very Positive" user rating on Steam so around 91% of users giving it their thoughts are positive.

I'm actually quite a big fan of the game too, it's always run rather nicely on Linux and their attention to detail with it is quite amazing. It's constantly expanded with new content and the developer is very responsive to issues.

Rise to Ruins can be found on itch.io and Steam.

Amazing. Hope more developers start doing the same.
I personally won't put money into kickstarter/patreon for games, because I'd rather buy it on Steam and refund if I don't like it. Though if other developers start doing it, maybe I'd be more inclined (even if it's just 1:1)

I supported the developer by buying the game. Looks really cool but wait until it leaves early access before I start playing it.

I find this rather weird, tbh. Wouldn't there have been a better way to use the money? Like, hire a composer to get more music as the game's soundtrack is very repetitive right now.

The people who give money on Patreon are doing so in order to enable the dev to develop and improve the game, not to earn money back.
I somewhat understand shutting down the campaign if the money isn't needed any more, but I just think there would have been better uses of the money than giving someone 20$...

This also sets a rather awkward precedent, as now some might expect similar behavior from other developers. But Patreon != Fig.

It's a smart way of making extra fuzz around the game and probably (I'm just guessing here) really cheap one. Bravo on multiple levels!

Also, patron is a monthly thing and it's not clear if people get twice their monthly pledge or twice the amount they paid over the whole patron campaign (i.e. several months). Can somebody clear that out?

The full link has more:
Quote(EDIT: There has been some minor confusion, so to clarify, this is your lifetime pledges, meaning if you donated $1 for 6 months, for a total of $6, you will get $12 back!)

I can understand what you mean, but since the game is obviously more successful than the developer thought when setting up the Patreon they just seem to feel like they really don't need it. The game is updated often too, nothing is to say more music isn't already on the roadmap. Personally, I think it's great to give back and not hoard it when you really don't need it.

I have Rise to Ruins on itch. I've only been able to get it to start up by installing it in a VM. The developer says the game can't run in jre versions shipped with Arch. I'm hoping that will change sometime. Since I have a pile of other games, I don't want to change my system jre to make just one work. Here's to hope. ^_^
