Seriously loving this revival of retro-looking first-person shooters coming out lately, with Prodeus being another that's now on Kickstarter and it does look very impressive.

The interesting thing about this one, is that I did ask on Steam back in November last year about Linux support and they said it would be for Windows. Seems they changed their mind on this, with their Kickstarter which states they are "Targeting PC platforms". Curious about their wording, I sent them a message and they replied to say this:

PC platforms includes Linux and Mac!

Surprising really to see a developer not use "PC" to simply mean Windows, it's not something we see very often. I did suggest they make it more clear but they haven't done so yet.

The campaign has until April 24th to get $52,500 and they've already got over $14,000 backed so it's looking like they should quite easily get funded. Not surprising, I think it looks fantastic. They said the campaign funding is to help bring in additional developers like artists, designers, animators, and engineers to expand the content for release.

As for the release, it's expected to enter Early Access this "fall" (which should include Linux support going by what they said) and the full release next year.

Head over to the Kickstarter here and wishlist on the Steam page.

I love this style, it's immersive as it differentiates and defines a world that engages the player. And that's a fundamental core trait of a good game in my book -- immersion.

I would definitely buy more of these style games.

To each their own, I love the style to it. There's no one single point to any art style, saying so would be quite an elitist attitude IMO.

Apart from the pixelation filter, it looks more like Doom 2016 than something retro. A bit odd. But the Kickstarter page suggests you can turn off the pixelation and just have it 1080p.

Sorry to be "that" guy, but please: How many litres of blood are in those things? Are they simply water balloons?
g000h Mar 26, 2019
For a retro-style game, I think it looks very good indeed. They hint that the game is very customisable in their developer chat section, and I'd probably dial-down the amount of blood if I was playing.
Nezchan Mar 26, 2019
Honestly, even though they say "retro" a lot, It doesn't look like anything earlier than Half-Life 2. So not all that retro, especially if you turn off the artificial pixelation.

Not seeing a lot in the video that sets it too far apart from the other shooters coming out though, so I guess they have to sell it on something.

I'm loving how much customization they allow from the HUD to the FOV, etc. They've got my pledge.

I was thinking there was so dang much gore that at times you couldn't see past it. I suspect when the guy talked about customizing the visual experience it was code for "Yes, there's a less gore option."

Hope it comes on GoG, look awesome.

I shall continue to disagree there, I think the mash of styles they have here in their art, lighting and so on has a huge amount of character and expression to it. I welcome it, I can't wait to play it.

I hope more developers experiment with very different style together, as long as they work like this does and to me it really does.

Wanted to chime in and say thanks all for the kind words and feedback, we really do read all the comments and take everything into consideration.

We'll more than likely need Linux testers at some point in the future, so if you would like to be around for that, join our discord discord.gg/GY3gCQU and say Hi in the Linux section for a tag.

Thanks again!

Looks like pixelized Doom 3. I hope it will be much better than Doom 3, else i'd better play more Doom 1 and 2.

Please implement body damage like in Soldier Of Fortune, in which you can torn apart legs and arms depending on were you fire, that will be great!

For me, retro games are all about game-play, not looks. You know, even back then players were divided into groups that tried to max out the fidelity and make it look the best way possible and those who tuned everything down to ugly texture goo and bright low poly models.

Game-play is the key! Focus on movement, weapon/item/upgrade/whatever handling, feedback for every action instead of eye-candy. Btw: that's why there is so much blood, it is feedback. OK, and a bit of visual sugar. Thoughtful level geometry beats textures in any resolution. Beautiful player models mean nothing if you cannot control them with the needed precision. No one likes to shoot mighty weapons that sound and feel more like "pew pew".

Graphics make a game look nice in trailers and screenshots, but if you are just after that, go watch some tech demos in benchmark tools or something.

That said: I'm no fan of the post-processing here either.

Fully agree. That post-processing pixel grid is awful.

Ofc, it's a matter of taste.
Maybe they'll optionally offer other aesthetics too. :)

We have visual options for most of the things everyone is talking about. https://i.imgur.com/hVckt7J.jpg

Also, did you mean dismemberment like this? https://twitter.com/ProdeusGame/status/987835658373824512

Haha, yes. ;)

Is it possible to turn off the grid?

One of the lower-res sampling without it could be just my cup of tea. :D

I never played the Doom games. I did play a tiny bit of the really old Wolfenstein on my uncle's computer when I was a kid. Not sure if I'll get it since I'm mostly into story-based games these days, but the quick movement and action do look fun.
Xpander Mar 27, 2019
Amazing looking game without the pixelation filter. Looking forward to playing it under Linux!
fractilegames Mar 27, 2019
They definitely got my attention. Gameplay looks promising and I actually like to visual style. The amount of blood reminds me of Brutal Doom.
