The RPCS3 team have a huge mountain to climb to get more PlayStation 3 titles playable but it's all coming together now.

The latest report shows that 1,119 titles are now class as playable, up from 1,081 reported the month before. Considering the amount of effort required in such an emulator, it's really impressive. Some of these newly playable titles include Skate 3, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace and more!

Their latest video to show off some improvements can be seen below:

One of the biggest features seems to be the multithreaded SPU cache compilation, which has resulted in drastically quicker startup times "when using the SPU LLVM recompiler". An example they gave was Red Dead Redemption, which went from over 12 minutes to just over 1 minute. The other noted change are FBO improvements, which resulted in plenty of games seeing improved graphics or fixed crashes.

As always, if you want all the details do take a look at their blog post.

Very nice Emulator, but what hardware config do you need to play this 1,119 games in a fluid way on Linux?

Playable doesn't mean fluid experience.

You will need those two on both Windows and Linux to get a good experience:

A beasty cpu ( Mostly Intel i7's as minimum )
A Vulkan capable gpu

Gpu doesn't need to be a strong one. Even a GTX 1050 should be fine.

In the video, the new fixes/improvements with SPU LLVM recompiler and enabling multithreaded are shown with an AMD Ryzen 7 1700, perhaps they were using that same CPU for testing the games.

I'm finding it hard to figure out how significant the improvement is. I mean, that's 38 more titles than a month before; repeated constantly that's around 400 titles per year . . . around how many PS3 titles are there, anyway?
Of course, that's only titles they know of; if there are a whole lot of titles all told it's also likely that many titles work that nobody's even tested.

I never had a PS3, but I presume there's a "core cannon" of the best of PS3 that everyone's interested if it runs or not. Just like how, with Proton, 90% of everyone's questions online were, "Does it run Witcher 3 and Overwatch?"

Oh. Well, that is impressive then. And at the current rate, in theory they'd have 'em all by the end of the year.
