PayPalGood news vault hunters, the recently released free DLC for both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel adding in multiple graphical upgrades will be supported in the Linux version.
While I did reach out to Aspyr Media previously, at the time they didn't know what the status would be as it wasn't clear if it was even coming to the PC version. They've since officially confirmed today on Twitter that it will come to Linux:
The Borderlands HD update is coming for Mac and Linux to Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel.
They said to keep an eye on this page for updates.
Great, I don't have a 4K display!
No worries, they did say "improvements can be seen on lower resolution displays as well" due to the multiple upgrades that come with the free DLC like:
- Remastered 4K environment textures, including geometry and skyboxes
- Remastered 4K characters and vehicles
- Remastered 4K weapon meshes and textures
- Improved Anti-Aliasing implementation, including improved edge line implementation
- This includes improved ink line definition and framing/outline around character models
- Improved Screen Space Ambient Occlusion
- An improved SSAO method for more realistic ambient lighting.
- Higher Resolution Dynamic Shadows
- Improved quality and smoothness of shadows, especially during movement
Really good news, last thing we want is to have a Linux version of a popular game left behind. So I'm really happy to see Aspyr Media be able to continue supporting their older ports.
You can find Borderlands 2 on Humble Store and Steam, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is also on Humble Store and Steam.

But still, It's nice to see they ported the remastered version too (could be because Valve's contract forbidden to release exclusive content of a game out of steam, or because it was cheap to port the remastered version since they already had one).

but at least only 6 months rather than a year.
Either way, since the Steam Machines hype is gone, I really doubt they will spent in another port for linux.

I'm glad to hear this. I was trying to install the texture pack last night and finally realized why it wasn't working.Yeah, I thought, “It's only new textures, surely it'll work anyway?” before realising that no, it's an update to the game itself too. Still, good to see that it's coming.

Hey, if Gearbox doesn't want our money, screw 'em. In this case it's only six months, so get it on a Steam winter/Summer sale a year after it releases. Apparently there's a $250 preorder package available for the game. None of us are going to order that because it requires Windows. I haven't heard, is the EPIC store running via WINE yet?

Apparently not Gearboxs call well at least according to Randy Pitchford 2k decided it should be exclusive to Epic store which is not good news for Xcom 3

Six months of timed EGS exclusive is indeed good. It gives Gearbox enough time for to fix the bugs of Borderlands 3 before the final release on Steam...Nice news. Unfortunately since Borderlands 3 will be Epic Store exclusive,

Consider the Epic store version of Borderlands 3 as an "Early Access BETA version" of the final game.

Yeah, I'm o.k. waiting 6mo if it'll iron out the bugs and let me play on a platform that I use and know and trust will be around long enough to keep my cloud saves in tact (steam). it would be amazing if it came out for Linux again. I really appreciated this.
I definitely played both borderlands 1 with wine and borderlands 2 on Linux native. I purchased the Pre-Sequel on Linux native as well but I just couldn't get into it. I also purchased The telltale games borderlands game and ran it with wine and proton.
However because I have what is now kind of a craptop as far as graphics are concerned I've been getting more enthusiastic about streaming game services. I think it's cool that Google is offering its own service running on linux and though I'm skeptical of signing up for another service with Google I'm interested in how that might benefit Linux overall.

Well, I clicked the entry for borderlands 2 hd texture pack on steam and it seemingly worked, launched borderlands 2 afterwards. Did the same for the PreSequel. Might be confirmation bias since there has been a couple months I don't play it but the game seemed crispier.
Also I was able to run the new Borderlands I GOTY Enhanced under proton, after renaming the game executable to Launcher.exe. Ran smoothly.
It is running well for me except a bunch of black texture boxes appearing in random spots.

My two sons and I play Borderlands 2 together almost every day; two on Kubuntu and one on Windows 7. Yesterday's update breaking cross platform multiplayer was all the prompt we needed to finally replace Win7 with Linux. It's good that the update will eventually be coming to Linux, but we want to keep playing NOW.

Borderlands 2 is quite possibly my favourite all time game. So good in fact, I haven't played the pre-sequel yet for fear of disappointment 
Whilst I appreciate this release, will it not just mean a massive download for very little gain? (For myself, I play in 1080p). Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a huge part (size wise) of the last DOOM these 4K textures?

A person switching to Linux is always positive !
But if the one on Win7 wants to play Fortnite or Apex with his friends, perhaps running Borderlands 2 via Proton is also an alternative ?

No it is not.
When my friends start playing at day one I can't join. When they played it through they will not start again because of me, not using windows.
And again it shows them Linux isn't worth a try, because of lacking game support.
The same is real for my son and his friends.
