Paradox Interactive and Harebrained Schemes have announced that you will soon be blowing up cities in BATTLETECH, with the Urban Warfare expansion.

I have to admit, this one does sound rather exciting especially considering they're saying every single building in a city will be "fully destructible". Considering your line of sight can be blocked, taking down a few buildings is going to end up essential to your survival in this. Not just that, there will also be things of interest littered around like explosive fuel trucks, so battles here will be quite intense.

All sorts of features are coming like new branching short stories (Flashpoints), three new enemy vehicles, electronic warfare and a new mission type named Attack and Defend. This new type of mission has you take out an enemy base, to stop constant attackers before they overthrow you. There's plenty more coming with the expansion including two new BattleMechs, like the experimental Raven 1X which packs an advanced electronic warfare package as well as the Javelin, with close-range knockout power!

This really does sound like an excellent addition to the game, which I really do need to spend a lot more time with.

The expansion will be available from (and you can pre-order now) Humble Store, GOG and Steam. It's due out on June 4th and it's included in the Season Pass so no extra purchase if you have that.

Is Battletech out of beta for Linux then? I recall some confusion as to whether or not the game was actually released or if the beta builds were just published.

If only they could change the "any 4 Mechs army" and go for "max tonage army"... That's what made my quit the game, when i was starting to search for the "heavier mechs only" and felt something was wrong.

are the loading times fixed? i tried it on a free weekend and loading times between missions were horrible on a modest xeon. no other game was loading so slow.

Same, even with the game being on an SSD and stuff. Made me not get the game.

I haven't heard anything official, but in my GOG library, there is a download available now. It's not marked beta. I dunno. I just saw it now because this posting made me curious!

It's had version parity with the other platforms for a while, gets updated alongside them, there don't seem to be outstanding bugs and has a SteamOS icon on Steam. That's about as "officially out" as I can imagine. Even last time when there was confusion as to the Linux version's status, it came off to me as PR/Publishers not really talking to their devs and knowing the full story and just covering their bases. So if it is still a beta, it's a beta in name only.

I hope it's not beta because I bought it on Steam a long time ago for Linux!

I should give the game a play especially since I really liked Shadowrun: Dragonfall. I know it's a different game but it's the same developer+publisher combo.

I got it for the same reason. In my book, Harebrained had a good Linux track record after launching three successful games on our platform.

Shame they chose to ruin that reputation. At the very least I will never kickstart any of their games again, after this experience. I am actually surprised that they didn't make three Windows DLCs before finishing the promised Linux port. :S

I think it would be nice if the person that redeemed drlamb's gift would post something.
