I haven't really kept up with Kerbal Space Program so I'm a little late on finding this out. On May 30th, the huge Breaking Ground expansion is going to be released.

The theme of this expansion is all about exploration, experimentation and technological breakthroughs. It's introducing a bunch of new equipment, some of which you will deploy onto the surface of a planet to do science which sounds fun. There's also new features that will be scattered across the surface of planets for you to study, along with a bunch of new building parts for your craft like hinges, pistons, rotors and more. You can see some of that in the trailer below:

Everyone will also be getting a free update around the same time too. They're giving modders the ability to use the new inventory mechanic used in the expansion, so even those who don't own it might be able to grab some fun mods that make use of it as it will be in the base game. They're also adding in EVA portraits, so you can check up on your Kerbals when they're out and about.

Don't own KSP? You can find it on Humble Store (on sale until around 5PM UTC), GOG and Steam.

it's free for those who purchased kerbal before april 2013 :)

Kerbal Space Program: Breaking Ground Expansion will be released on May 30th for PC for $14.99 USD. And yes, we’re keeping our promise that all players who purchased the game through April 2013 will receive the expansion for free. We’ll provide more details on how that will work before launch.

That sounds like a great reason to get back into KSP. I played it a lot a few years ago until I had visited every planet and moon, then stopped completely and haven't looked at it since.

Can't wait for Danny2462 to get his hands on all this new stuff! I can only imagine in rapt horror the new ways he'll find to spaghettify the universe… :D

Which broken Fonts are you talking about? I've been playing for years, and never noticed any broken fonts.

I guess the article could be a little bit clearer - the Breaking Ground DLC is $14.99 USD, free for early adopters, but there's also a free update to the base game which adds in some extra features:

With the release of Breaking Ground, the base game is also getting some updates that will add a few new features.

For starters, the inventory mechanic that is used by deployed science will be available in the base code, for modders to use and extend as they wish.

Additionally, we're adding two extensions to our action group system. The first one adds another type of action group for controls that let you bind input controls to fields - an axis group. The second adds Action Sets, which allow you to enable or disable sets of axis or action groups.

This extends what you can do with a limited number of keys, letting you put your craft into different modes of operation. You can even override the base controls with the action set feature, further fine tuning the interface between you and your craft. We developed these extensions to give players more options to control their robotics, but it certainly will be useful for stock and modded players as well.

Finally, we’ve added EVA portraits, so that you can check data on your Kerbals even when they’re out and about.

Hope that helps clear it up.

Oh man, I can't wait. We are finally getting robotics parts in the stock game. Which means we can finally tuck complex structures inside fairings at launch, like planes with deployable wings or whatnot. Not to mention rotors, that's going to allow for all kinds of helicoptery contraptions. Stratzenblitz, Matt, Scott, Turbo Pumped and the other Youtubers are going to be all over this.

I just hope that electric motors consume a fair amount of energy, otherwise we are going to see too many electric airplanes.

I believe that the best launch system for EVE will become an electric airplane+rocket stage (to get easier through the thickness part of the atmosphere).

Which broken Fonts are you talking about? I've been playing for years, and never noticed any broken fonts.

I bought the game a couple of years ago and it was missing most of the text, making it unplayable. They were supposedly using proprietary Microsoft fonts that you had to jump through hoops to get on Linux.

I haven't bothered with it since.

Hmmm, so I probably didn't notice anything because I have the mscorefonts package installed (iirc it's a dependency of wine).
