Seems like Valve really are onto something here, as Dota Underlords recently managed to pass 200K players online at the same time and another update is out now.
On June 23rd, Underlords hit a new all-time peak of 202,334 players which is pretty great. Although, from what we know this does include mobile players too but it's still a good sign that Valve are actually making a good game here. It makes sense to include mobile players, since they're still using Steam services and you're all matchmaking together. Even during the usual quieter hours, Underlords still constantly remains in the top 10 most played games on Steam.
As for the latest update, it's mostly about balance. There's some performance improvements for both PC and mobile and one change I am particularly happy to see, is an update to the opponent selection logic, so hopefully you won't keep fighting the same players in your game so often.
As a reminder, Valve have a lot of plans for it including seasonal rotation, a battle pass (an optional seasonal payment for more rewards), tournaments, daily challenges, levels and rewards, a turbo mode (faster games) and more. Underlords is likely to keep growing, which is good for Linux gamers especially as it seems to be the new popular thing and it works great on Linux.

When you pick a few heroes you want and they never show up again, that is a big issue in my opinion.

You can also say that you failed to plan for alternatives. Since the sell price of one star heroes is the same as the purchase price, you can store stock a few alternatives.

Sure you can sell level one heros but that doesn't mean the next hero you get will come up either. I stand by that this game isn't fun because of the complete randomness of it. As far as I can tell, there is little skill involved with this game.
I've had several games where all I needed was one more of a heroes to get a three star hero. 20 rounds later and I'm still waiting on that hero...
Another good example is items. If you are lucky enough to get the brawny item and lucky enough to get some good brawny units no one will beat you.
There needs to be a more skillful way to pick heroes and items.
