HyperRogue absolutely melts my brain and yet I still keep coming back to it! It just had a huge update too, allowing you to play it in some interesting new ways. These new ways might just cook your brain that little bit more, it certainly did give mine a workout.

Writing about the brand new update, the developer said this:

HyperRogue takes place in a world where things such as rectangles and parallel lines do not exist. Lines will never run together forever "in parallel", the space between them will spawn new directions by itself, making our lines diverge. While the world of HyperRogue is presented as a flat thing, it is actually larger than anything Euclidean, in any number of dimensions. But what if we take it into three hyperbolic dimensions?

And to show off the new features, how about a first-person mode? Yes, you can now do that. You can enable it from the 3D Settings menu (or the Quick Settings menu) and it's pretty wild, take a look:

The non-Euclidean nature of the game, taking place on the hyperbolic plane make it quite a challenge to navigate but it also makes it incredibly interesting to play. See the full crazy details on update 11.1 here, it's pretty amazing.

Find it on the Official SiteSteam and itch.io. You can also grab an older version to try out for free, which is pretty sweet and the source code is on GitHub.

There is a lot of very interesting mathematics in this game. Going through the "introduction" gives an excellent overview of different ways of dealing with hyberbolic geometry. Despite the weirdness of non-euclidean geometries, they turn out to be very useful for a lot of things in the 'real' world.

I still haven't played the new version – I've been busy with Pathway, gardening and varnishing/sanding wood – but the video and some of the previews I've seen on Discord during the last days make me feel queasy. I think I'll avoid the first-person mode.
