Another year, another massive sale is now live on Steam. Let’s take a look at what Valve are doing this year and what you should be looking out for.

This time around, Valve aren’t doing any special trading cards. They’re trying something a little different! You will be entering the "Steam Grand Prix" by joining a team (go team Hare!), earning points for rewards and having a shot at winning some free games in the process. Sounds like a good bit of fun, the specific-game challenges are a nice touch.

As for what to pick up? That’s very subjective but I’ve decided to break it down into some lists for you this year to do it a little differently. All games will be ordered from highest to lowest discount at time of writing.

Indie Games - Some fun titles with Linux support from smaller developers, those who likely need that bit of extra support.

Bigger Games - Big and beautiful, featuring Linux support.

Steam Play - Games worth checking out, that work well.

Obviously there's a ton more, far more than I could ever recommend personally, those are just some games I consider to be worthy of some attention.

The sale ends on July 9th. Plenty of time, as expected the Steam store completely died when the sale went live and is still up and down even now, so picking titles has been difficult. I may add more suggestions later.

Do come back and let us know what awesome deal you pick up!

I have been having a lot of fun with Mad Max, lately. I think the Overload game is a good deal, too.
Seems like a lot of the same prices that have appeared as weekly sales or daily sales. Was looking forward to some extraordinary discounts, but will still pick up a few games just for laughs.

GRRR. I feel I was denied critical, Neeeeeeeed to know, Information.

I have dropped £60 this week on Games/DLC and now a steam sale appears.

Guess I have no option but to check out the wishlist which has 100 games on it.

Gaben, Why do you always do this to me.:)

Quoting: SalvatosInteresting event, although I don't have any games currently tied to its achievements. Very interesting prizes too. The way it's designed, though, it looks like everyone should just join the same team (i.e. corgi) to ensure they are eligible for the free games.
Wrong. Only X players from the top 3 teams will win prizes. Meaning that you want to be one the smallest winning team. Corgi is probably the biggest now, not the best choice.

Baldur's Gate 1+2 (Complete Saga) -79 % and the full Infinity Collection at -84 % are a real deal.

BTW

I bought BG 1+2 plus expansion packs when they were released.
Loved them but due to lack of time I never finished any of it. #shameonme

At that price I'm buying them again (enhanced edition) as they now support steam cloud saves.

Imho, that's one of the best features of Steam.
Log into your account at a different computer and the progress is shared.
If devs really do care this even works across platforms (not always though).

I'm using that quite often to the point where it really p*sses me off when it's not available.
Please ask devs to support this if they currently don't. :)
Valve should make that a mandatory feature for every game that supports save games. Really.

You can request a refund on the games if you haven't played them for 2h+ yet. "the game is cheaper now" is a valid reason for that.

For anyone who doesn't already know it, SteamDB has some very nice filtering options:

Well, so far it seems impossible to gauge which teams will be #2 and #3, so it's a risky call to make since you can't change your team. Since lower positions also have fewer random winners AND fewer prizes per winner in the case of the final draws, the best position depends on the actual number of entrants per team, and it might not be worth risking being completely excluded from the draws. Perhaps a safe position will have emerged by the end of the first period tomorrow, but every other team has been uncharacteristically close ever since I started looking at the race.
