Yorg, an in-development FOSS racing game is nearing the release of update 0.11, with a Release Candidate now available for testing.

In the style of the classics like Micro Machines, while early it's actually quite promising. The update notes for this are quite short and to the point, the developer said they will be going into some more detail when it's out properly for everyone. Even so, they did give some brief highlights of what to expect:

  • Local multiplayer
  • Joypad support
  • Particle effects
  • Reimplementation of the online multiplayer's UI
  • Translation updates (Scottish Gaelic, Spanish, Galician, French)
  • SFX improvements
  • AI improvements
  • Performance improvements
  • Driving model improvements.

They also included some new screenshots of what to expect from it (click to enlarge):

I'm glad they took my feedback on and improved the multiplayer UI, testing it out briefly today it does seem to be far less confusing. It's not drastically different, but it flows better and is easier to understand, a welcome improvement. Really great to see progress on this continue, could end up being a lot of fun.

You can find their update post here, with download links here. As for the source, that's up on GitHub under the GPLv3.

I gave it a look but gamepad support (both DS4 and SC) are bugged right now.

Not wanting to be a ass but, it always amazes me how some developers neglect gamepads on modern PC games. I understand some people are hardcore mouse/keyboard devotees, but this is a racing game...

As of the gameplay, it is basically a drift game, not like the forgiving gameplay of Micro Machines. If you are not a fan of drifting, better not downloading this one.

I was about to say the screenshots look a lot like Skidmarks on the Amiga. Given what you've said, I wouldn't be surprised if it's an inspiration, at least as much as MM.

Since it is open source, I wonder how hard it would be to get into it and increase the tire friction value for those who don't want to drift so much.

Hi! I'm very sorry for this. Anyway, this is why release candidate builds exist. If you want, please report your bugs on the issue tracker, thanks!

Eheh actually I played Skidmarks a lot, you are right. ^_^

There are some text files which define physical properties. Actually, the friction is one of the values that you can easily edit there. Anyway, there are several physical properties that change dynamically. So, if you want a more advanced control, you should actually edit some Python code.
