Emberlight, a roguelike dungeon crawler from Quarter Onion Games is releasing with Linux support on August 13th and it does sound like it could be interesting.

Quarter Onion Games are saying it will be a "true roguelike dungeon crawler" and while they don't go on to explain what makes it "true" versus other games, I still love the sound of it. The gameplay loop in this especially, as you will absorb abilities used by enemies which eventually corrupts you. Eventually turning to darkness, you become the boss for the next run-through along with everything you provided them with.

Their trailer even has Linux mentioned very clearly at the end:

While I do love the sound of it, I'm curious to see how they will balance this corruption. If you always end up as the boss for the next run, can the game ever be won? That's a question I hope to find out at release. Apart from that, absorbing enemy abilities does sound very fun. Sound a little like MidBoss in a way, just without snatching their body too.

On Steam it currently only mentions Windows, so I spoke to the developer and they confirmed on Steam both Linux and Mac will be available at launch.

You can follow/wishlist it on Steam.

Remember: If you do wishlist things on Steam, set your platform properly to show up as a Linux wishlist.

Looks just absolutely beautiful. What puts me off a fair bit is the "beat your old boss-self" mechanic. I play these games in a very min/max way, so when I defeat the game's boss, I like to do it in a fairly brutal, overkill way. If I then have to play again, knowing that the horror waiting at the end of the story is my old min/maxed, brutal, overkill self... I lose motivation to play. Both because it'll be really hard, but also because I form an attachment to my heroes.

I hated Warcraft 3 for pulling the same stunt with Arthas. "Hey, play this awesome paladin for 10 missions, form an attachment to how pure and powerful he is, powering him up hugely along the way! Haha! Fooled you! Arthas is now the bad guy and you'll fight him later on."

Urgh. :D

Developer here. Glad you love the look of Emberlight. :)

Corrupted bosses are placed in separate quests that are chosen at the beginning of each run. Every time you win a run, a new corrupted boss is added to the pool, but you can continue to do quests that are against normal bosses without a problem. The corrupted boss mechanism is there for you to create a sort of user-defined difficulty if that interests you and want an added challenge, but we'll continue to add new quests and themes as the bulk of Emberlight's game flow.
