Today Proxy Studios and Slitherine have released the latest DLC for the turn-based strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Gladius, with the Chaos Space Marines making their way across the planet.

Also available today is a big save-breaking patch. Update 1.3, which is actually a pretty huge patch for the game adds in new items, new achievements, new tips, new settings, performance improvements, fixes to the AI, save game format improvements to reduce UI lag with large saves, a mod management screen and there's quite a bit more. Good to see it really well supported a year after the original release.

Feature highlight:

  • Boons of Chaos - Champions who prove themselves in battle might find boons bestowed upon them by the Dark Gods, and even rise to the rank of Daemon Prince. But beware, for the Gods are fickle, and those who they do not consider worthy will be transformed into Chaos Spawns instead.
  • Veterans of the Long War - Chaos Space Marines have fought a 10,000 years long war on the Imperium and its Corpse-Emperor. All servants of the Imperium are their arch-enemy: as thus all Chaos Space Marines units have experience in fighting against Space Marine units and gain increased morale and melee accuracy.
  • Unholy Rites - Chaos cities are designed to glorify the Dark Gods and torture their inhabitants in the Gods’ name. Population is a resource that Chaos Space Marines can use for unholy rites, granting significant temporary boosts depending on the God which is being worshipped.
  • Mark of Chaos - Worship any of the four Chaos Gods, and spend influence to gain unique permanent buffs to individual units. The Dark Gods are generous!

I have enjoyed quite a number of hours in it before this, especially with the previously released Tyranids DLC. It is a good game, great if you love both strategy games and Warhammer. I would still like the combat animations to be a bit more exciting but the rest seems good.

You can pick up the game and DLC from Humble Store, GOG and Steam.

This game is dope, but I gotta call out the "well supported" comment...it's not. This is another in a line of games broken on SteamOS and other distros (glibc), and I've spoken to them on the forums, there are no plans to fix. I know how the game goes, and they can't support every distro, and if I'm being honest I could play this on one of my Ubuntu machines, so I'm just bitching...but my gaming rig is SteamOS, and this will likely never run there again. Wasted my $$$ on all the DLC up till now, but I will not be buying this xpac, unfortunately.

I'll bite. It worked perfectly on Ubuntu, also works on Manjaro (although the launch scripts supplied with the GOG version seems iffy, have to launch the game directly - will let them know).

SteamOS rarely sees updates, it's also one of the smallest minorities in distribution use. I don't expect any single developer to focus effort on SteamOS until Valve are ready to put the light back on it and more people use it.

Edit: Even looking over the SteamOS support topic, they did try to help and did include the extra libs they said they would (verified with a fresh download from GOG).

Fair enough, however none of those libs were any of the ones SteamOS needed. Realistically, if what they are claiming to support is Ubuntu 18.04, then they need to say that and remove "SteamOS + Linux" in their min requirement. I'm pretty sure I've seen games that have Ubuntu specifically listed, without SteamOS.

That was my post, and really all I asked was "Hey this is broken on SteamOS, any plans to fix" to which the answer was "no"....which I understand to some degree, but that needs to be advertised. If you dig through those forums, you'll find another post (also by me) from when the game first launched. It was broken on SteamOS then as well: https://steamcommunity.com/app/489630/discussions/5/2534848209917927591/

Which I fixed by pulling the file from a Stretch repo. I'm curious as to whether it ever actually worked on SteamOS at any point....but seeing how I'm the only person who brought it up,I get that not many are using SteamOS. All good, but no more $$$ for DLC from this guy.

They are not able to adjust the "SteamOS + Linux" bit. Hard coded by Valve.

Sounds like a SteamOS problem to me. Have you opened a ticket on Valve's GitHub for it?
wazz4657 Jul 18, 2019
No. A week before that post on the Gladius forums, I posted on the SteamOS forums asking if we'd ever see a glibc update. I was attempting to get back into Gladius in advance of the expansion release, but ran into the aforementioned dependency issues. But if you've ever visited that forum, you'll know it's a ghost town:

https://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse/discussions/1/1640916564834796450/

After no official response there, and no joy from the Gladius forums a week later, I decided to stop screaming into the void and just play some more No Man's Sky.

The GitHub not the forum: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamOS/issues

Don't get me wrong it's a shame when a game doesn't work on SteamOS directly but no one focuses on it, not even Valve at the moment.
wazz4657 Jul 18, 2019
No, but there is an unassigned, open issue from Sept 2018 that covers the same territory:

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamOS/issues/649

Quoting: liamdaweno one focuses on it, not even Valve at the moment.

Word.

Whelp , here's a purchase i regret.
It does not start on Linux.
It crashes on my old Windows laptop before i finish one turn.
Here's a refund in the making.
Will wait for some pointers on the linux issues but may ask for a refund before it's too late.
