Another month has come and go and so ProtonDB, the super handy unofficial tracker for Steam Play compatibility ratings has released another data dump.
Looking to get started with Steam Play? Be sure to check our previous beginners guide.
Once again, here's a quick look over some points shown in the data. August had a total of 3,848 reports sent in with ProtonDB showing a total of 56,345 reports overall. From that, ProtonDB is currently reporting 6,129 "games work" which ProtonDB base on those with at least one gold rating or higher.
Let's do something a little differently for August and start our dive by taking a look at the top 20 most rated games across the month. Sorted by total number of ratings, while also showing how many were Platinum or Gold to give you a good idea how they run overall.
Name | Total | Plat | Gold |
---|---|---|---|
No Man's Sky | 118 | 28 | 30 |
Warframe | 48 | 4 | 28 |
Grand Theft Auto V | 47 | 18 | 21 |
Path of Exile | 29 | 12 | 7 |
DOOM | 27 | 25 | 2 |
Age of Wonders: Planetfall | 27 | 0 | 15 |
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | 27 | 23 | 1 |
Fallout 4 | 24 | 0 | 9 |
Elite Dangerous | 23 | 0 | 16 |
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition | 22 | 1 | 9 |
Age of Empires: Definitive Edition | 21 | 0 | 0 |
FINAL FANTASY XIV Online | 18 | 2 | 14 |
BeamNG.drive | 17 | 3 | 5 |
Remnant: From the Ashes | 17 | 0 | 1 |
GRID 2 | 16 | 0 | 6 |
Paladins | 16 | 1 | 1 |
Quake Champions | 15 | 7 | 3 |
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | 15 | 10 | 3 |
Squad | 14 | 7 | 2 |
MONSTER HUNTER: WORLD | 14 | 3 | 7 |
No Man's Sky had an absolutely massive update recently with a ton of new and expanded features so it's naturally top of the list. Age of Wonders: Planetfall is a brand new release, one hotly anticipated by strategy game fans so it's not exactly surprising to see it there.
What games have sadly had a number of broken reports through August? If it has a high number, it's likely one to avoid for now until a later version of Proton may fix it.
Name | Borked (broken) |
---|---|
Age of Empires: Definitive Edition | 23 |
Age of Wonders: Planetfall | 9 |
Metal Wolf Chaos XD | 5 |
New Frontier | 3 |
Telling Lies | 3 |
KILL la KILL -IF | 2 |
MotoGP19 | 2 |
Freefall 3050AD | 2 |
Daymare: 1998 | 2 |
Blair Witch | 2 |
I'll admit I'm personally quite sad that Age of Empires: Definitive Edition doesn't yet work with Steam Play. AoE is a game I have such fond memories of playing at a grandparents house, being able to play that smoothly on Linux would be pretty sweet don't you think?
Now onto the brighter side again of Steam Play. What games only first being reported in August had some good reports on them (Gold+)?
Hopefully some of you found that interesting. May have more stats to come in a few days, after I decide what else to take a look at. If you wish to look at the data yourself, it's on GitHub.
If you wish to make viewing ratings easier, there are some web browser plugins you can install. There's the Firefox plugin ProtonDB for Steam which adds the rating to store pages. Additionally, there's also the Augmented Steam plugin for Firefox and Chrome which adds a handy link to the ProtonDB entry but it doesn't show ratings yet, it does however have a lot of extras that you might find useful anyway.
What have you been testing out with Steam Play in the last month or so? Do let us know your thoughts in the comments.
Edit: Oop, and can't forget Resident Evil 4; was waiting for the black textures bug to be fixed for ages!

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
a little to expensive for a 4h long game, but it went to my watchlist
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
to make sure the sound works well. Other than that it runs really well and looks great. It's a fantastic game to try out, since it's free-to-play, and generally not disgusting with monetisation.
Quoting: belisamaAugmented Steam does show ratings. For example, if you look at the page for Staxel (https://store.steampowered.com/app/405710/Staxel/) you can see "ProtonDB Rating: borked".I've just installed the extension, but apart from the ProtonDb links (which i've had to enable in the preferences), i can't see anything proton related ("ctrl-f -> 'proton' " returns just one match, the link to the protondb page)
Using it on firefox, where is it supposed to be?
Thanks!

Quoting: kokoko3kI did test before writing, it does not have the feature. There is an open request for it: https://github.com/tfedor/AugmentedSteam/issues/255Quoting: belisamaAugmented Steam does show ratings. Ok, just upvoted it on github, thanks ;)
Quoting: PhiladelphusI'm really confused seeing Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on there
It's the predecessor, not the sequel. The first one already has a Definitive Edition. The second one has an 'HD Remaster', but is getting a Definitive Edition as well in the future. Yes, it's a bit confusing :)
