This is quite amazing. I never grow tired of seeing what people in the Doom modding community are able to achieve.

Doom 4 Vanilla recently showed up, what the developer describes as "Doom 2016 the Way 1993 Did It" and it really does look like a huge amount of fun. It's not the work of a single person though, as it does pull in mods and resources from others all under one roof.

More about it:

After almost two years, I'm proud to announce my biggest project so far: It's a gameplay mod inspired by Doom 2016, made to be compatible with any source-port (or without any of them).

100% vanilla compatible and full of dehacked tricks! All under the limitations of the original Doom2.exe

It was recently updated to 1.1 too, which should give better compatibility with GZDoom. You can find the full details on it here.

If you do try it out, let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Hat tip to ryao.

I created compressed archives for Linux users. I explain how I setup this mod to run here.
For some odd reason the Winrar archive kept failing to unzip, so I used Winrar.

Well, I'm extremely impressed.

one thing - Let's hope the a-holes at Bethesda won't try to shut this down.
another thing - It's pretty amusing that while the next 'modern' DOOM will be trying to revive the original monster designs, this mod puts all the new designs back into the old game.

I dont know they didnt strike down sigill did they and hes not affliated with Id or Bethesda anymore as long as this is a mod and not commercial should be fine. Now if they start selling it as a stand alone then they would be screwed legally speaking.

If this mod requires wad files from Doom they won't.

This is great but I can't even finish the 3rd map, MAP03 UAC Mars Base 03... how the hell do you get the blue and red keys? :)

Type idkfa and you'll be rewarded with the blue and red keys. :)

I've been playing this with gzdoom and working fine. Needed to put the official DOOM2.WAD into the same folder as the D4V files in order to play. Noting that the D4V mod works with original DOOM2 maps, but also with the included KSSHT, SCYTHE, BACULUS map packs. So far, I've tried out some of original, KSSHT and SCYTHE maps.

I have also been playing the Chronodis map wad downloaded here:
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/108737-d4v-single-map-chrono-displacement-labs/

And that is also working great (fantastic map designed for D4V) with gzdoom.

Commandline:
gzdoom -file chrondis.wad D4V.wad -nodeh -deh D4V.deh
