It's been a bit of a whirlwind of Paradox news recently and we have even more to share. With a tiny amount of effort, you can get The Old Gods expansion for Crusader Kings II free.

This is after Crusader Kings II was set free to play and Crusader Kings III was announced just like I suggested it would be.

So how do you go about getting more free goodies with The Old Gods expansion? Quite simple really, sign up to their newsletter/account here (a normal Paradox account login seemed to work) and when confirmed you can login and grab your free expansion Steam key.

However, it's not entirely clear if this is supposed to only be for new subscriptions. For me it when I login to the subscription page, it has a tick by the expansion and my Paradox account shows it in my game list so from everything shown I should have it but the page lists no Steam key. Seems others are having the same issue, so might just be a temporary problem. Still, worth doing if you don't own it for whenever they fix it.

Update: Paradox replied:

We are aware that some customers have not been provided with the Old Gods DLC after signing up to the email list. This is down to the sheer volume of sign ups (you rock!) and we are fixing it by the end of the week. Don't worry, you'll get your DLC, it's just going to take a little bit of time as we spent all last week at PDXCon and also moved offices so we have our hands full at the moment ;)! Please check your games tab (accounts.paradoxplaza.com/games) at the end of the week and you should see it there.

Update #2: Should all be fine now.

A pretty safe giveaway for Paradox since this was one of the better early expansion packs, and the majority of CK2 players already own it.

Yes, probably the most essential of all of the DLC. Worth picking up.

Well, I already bought it (and the base game) three times, all through Humble Bundles, so not directly affected.

There are supposedly also in-game challenges to unlock cosmetics for CK3, but I wasn't able to find those when I opened the game (not that I looked very hard, I had a game ongoing already).

Guess they got my message then (and probably 99999x others emailing them).

I actually don't have this (only have the base game, which I will get around to playing sometime when I have lots of time for the expected addiction) so might pick it up.

Well According to the 3.30 changelog (via Changelog.txt in the game's directory):

Spoiler, click me

- Monarch's Journey is available to all non-Linux players. This is a feature which will bi-weekly present new characters to play with a scenario of challenges to earn cosmetic rewards for the upcoming Crusader Kings III game.

Emphasis mine, I hope this doesn't mean we won't see CK3. I have 657 hours in CK2; it's my most played game on Steam!

Woah, that is horrible.

The announcement of CK3 said it was going to come to Linux, and I think it was not an accident. But not being able to participate in this campaign is already bad... not so much for missing the cosmetics (though having an inferior release is annoying), but for the hype and the challenges themselves (I was looking for some ideas for a next game, thought this could spice things up).

I bought the base game from Humble Bundle about two years ago, booted it once but ended up not really liking it (unlike HoI4 or EU4). Following a certain recent Youtube review I decided to try it again about a few days before the PDXCon sale, only to realise that having only the base game solid half of it was behind a paywall including more broadly speaking my ancestors, since our first kings were pagans (thus I needed The Old Gods DLC) in the earliest period I could start the game in without paying for DLC. The sale rolled over, so I decided to grab the Dynasty Starter Pack, out of which The Old Gods is the single most expensive part. Now the base game is F2P anyway and this happens. If anything, this makes me less inclined to buy further packs.
