As I suggested they would when setting Crusader Kings II permanently free (but not the DLC), Paradox Interactive have announced Crusader Kings III.

"Crusader Kings III is a grand medieval simulator where you are free to live out any plausible ruler fantasy that we could think of - but not without challenge." says Henrik Fåhraeus, the Game Director. "Seeing its predecessor explode in popularity was very satisfying, especially considering that user friendliness was never our primary goal. Now we have a chance to address an even larger audience."

  • Learn as You Go: Guided advice to help newcomers navigate a rich medieval world. In-game suggestions tip you off to paths you might not have considered.
  • The Usual Crusader Kings Fun: Keep a stubborn council in line, scheme against your overbearing uncle or marry the rich duchy…oops, I mean pious duke or duchess of your dreams.

Since CK II is quite old now, of course CK III is going to be a lot prettier. They've confirmed it will have new 3D character models and a much more detailed world map. Not only that, it should also be a lot more welcoming to new players so if you found the previous game a bit too intimidating you're hopefully going to enjoy this one.

Once again it seems Paradox Interactive and Paradox Development Studio will be supporting Linux too. It already has a Linux system requirements section ready to be filled out on Steam, plus SteamDB clearly shows Linux was added right away to the list of platforms. Even their own first-party store has a Linux icon, however I'm waiting for an absolute 100% confirmation on that at the moment, will update when they reply.

They will be giving out more details on Crusader Kings III over the next few months. Hopefully it won't come out half-baked like Imperator did but they're supporting it well to get it into a good state.

If you wish to follow it, the Steam store page is already up. You can also now get Crusader Kings II free to keep on Steam.

I was late to the party with CK2 and the sheer amount of DLC is daunting, so a new fresh slate in CK3 might be a great place for me to start. And good to see that this supports Linux :)

The Linux support for this is not unexpected, but I am really relieved to see confirmation. It would break my heart to have a new Paradox game, and particularly a sequel to CK2, not available on Linux.

Besides that, looking good so far. I particularly like the new skill tree for foci. The holdings being present on the map are also a natural evolution, and the interface and map look better overall (not that it is hard)... though I'll say that I don't like when they showcase map pictures showing the terrain, as in my experience I never see that when playing (always a political map or another) so it just doesn't matter how pretty it is.

I'm glad to see a sequel to ck. I would have preferred Victoria but ck it's OK too.

The only thing is that due to the missteps with their last releases I don't feel like it will be a day 1 purchase for me. I want to see some 1-2 weeks reviews first. But I definitely look forward to it.

Moreover, I wish best luck to Pdx with their console and mobile efforts. But I hope that as opposed to Blizzard they find a good balance between their pc core projects and all the rest. We really need good games like ck2 and eu4 around in pc gaming future.

Won't be a day1 buy for me. Maybe a year in, depending on the support/state of the linux build. I had troubles to put it mildy with EU4 games with friends (a 2+ years bug. Kinda putting off when you can finally play again the game with friends, but then pretty much everybody mostly play something else...), and to see if they finally address the DLCs rain vs fixing problems.

I definitely wish them good luck, but I won't be on board if they never even so slightly address the problems.

My wishes got heard! yay!

Cautiously waiting to see how much of the existing content they'll cut in the new game :).

I have a feeling that CK3 is going to feel pretty thin content wise compared to CK2 with its many expansions and years of active development. Probably a good idea to wait a couple of years for them to flesh it out. In the meantime, maybe I'll finally be able to finish a complete game of CK2 without a big update being released forcing me to restart!
