Iterative Games say they've combined elements inspired by Contra and Metal Gear Solid to create a cyberpunk side-scroller shooter with stealth elements with Contract Work.

Funded on Kickstarter way back in 2013, Contract Work is the creation of Kee-Won Hong, the sole developer of Iterative Games. What they're attempting to do with Contract Work is take some elements of classic retro shooters like Megaman and Contra, add in some character development and mix in a cyberpunk world like you might find in Akira or Ghost in the Shell. What they've ended up with here is a mix of so many things.

In Contract Work each run is different, giving you a selection of random contracts to take on. These contracts all offer something different. One might have you defending data servers, another a hostile takeover of a rival's HQ.

Feature Highlight:

  • Select from multiple weapons and hack programs for each run
  • Shop the black market to install and unlock up to 50 unique upgrades
  • Unlock new weapons and hack programs
  • Limitless replayability – every run is different

Already available in Early Access on itch.io, the developer confirmed the Linux build will be coming there too it just needs more testing. As for the Steam Early Access release, they're aiming for November 25.

During development they're planning on adding in new enemies, traps, environments, more upgrades, new unlockable items, new game modes, daily challenges and more. They said it should remain in Early Access for around six months.

Planned release date June 2013.

QuoteI noticed you have a pretty aggressive release date. Can you actually finish the game by then?

Yes! Most of the heavy technology work is already done, and HTML5/Impact makes updating quick and easy. In addition, after Contract Work goes live I can easily add additional content and features. I'm very confident that Contract Work will be available for everyone to play starting June 2013.

Looking at their older videos, it's a good thing it was delayed, it looks a huge amount better.
