Releasing with Linux support in December, The Sapling looks like a nice casual sim where you design your own plants and animals.

Probably one of the most difficult types of games to get right, many have attempted some sort of evolution sim and it's always great to see more. Take a look at some early footage below:

Feature Highlight:

  • Design plants and animals.
  • Fast-forward time to and watch the ecosystem work like a charm or slowly fall apart
  • A sandbox mode where you can skip time and turn on random mutation, allowing true evolution.
  • An instinct system where you can specify what an animal should do when it hears or sees something.
  • A procedural animation system so any animal can perform any animation.
  • Procedural music mixed on the fly.
  • Everything set up to be easily extended by players.

The developer, Wessel Stoop, said they just wanted to play a simple sim where you build your own plants and animals. After the 2008 title Spore was released and didn't quite fit what they wanted, they decided to make one themselves and so The Sapling was born.

You can wishlist and follow on itch.io and Steam, releasing on December 12.
