This is a welcome surprise, Zachtronics have released another new game into Early Access. MOLEK-SYNTEZ is all about making drugs out of ordinary industrial chemicals.

According to what they said, it has a little bit of everything from the other games with some new experiments "in the Zachtronics-style puzzle game space". Along with "lots and lots of benzene rings, which never quite worked right in SpaceChem".

Feature Highlight:

  • MAKE DRUGS - Program your molecular synthesizer (MOLEK-SYNTEZ) to convert ordinary industrial chemicals like benzene, acetone, and hydrochloric acid into a variety of small molecules with various pharmacological effects.
  • SHOW OFF - Optimize your solutions and share them with the world using the built-in score histograms, friend leaderboards, and animated GIF exporter.
  • CHEAT AT CARDS - In a move that should surprise no one, MOLEK-SYNTEZ contains an original Zachtronics solitaire game. When you get stuck, cheat and place your cards wherever you want. Just don't do it so much that you get in over your head...

As an absolutely huge fan of Opus Magnum, I'm going to have to give this a go. Love the sharing ability, had a lot of fun with that before.

You can find it now on Steam. They confirmed a GOG release is expected within a month or two once the game is properly finished.

Oh no. Zach! Why do you do this to me?

Is this rooted in real chemistry? Would it finally allow me to learn the correct names for organic chemistry functional groups & their biological functions?

Compared to SpaceChem, I hope the UI in this one is more straightforward to use. The trailer doesn't give too much of a clue, really.

It's me or Zachtronics release a game every 6 months or so? :D

Not their fault, though; they say it happens 'accidentally': https://twitter.com/zachtronics

A polished, unique puzzle game every 6 months? And Linux support on day one? Sounds great to me! Will definitely be picking this one up.

Not sure. That is a real life molecule there on the right, though. It's an antibiotic per Google.

One thing about organic chemistry is that it can be very puzzle like. Ie. Process X will always add an ethyl group to the 3rd carbon of a benzene. I'd hazard it prolly uses the basic rules as a guide for the rules in the puzzle. I wouldn't be surprised if they skipped over or fluffed some of the 3 dimensional stuff. For example, that ring in the picture is how we humans would draw it. In real life it's shaped like a chair when using all 3 dimensions. On top of it many of those processes might only work on the "top" or "bottom" of the molecule depending on where the other reactants were.

I really want this game, accurate or not. I wonder if we could convince them to do an NMR based DLC. I was a huge dork for those when I was taking organic.
