It's getting a lot more difficult to hold myself back on that buy button on Vintage Story, with so many huge updates to it lately. Another is now in testing, adding in a big new weather system.

This new weather system is location-bound, meaning different biomes will see different weather patterns. There's also various degrees of wind, snow, hail and other effects. Weather will also affect certain game mechanics, like rain putting out fire. You can see a little video of it in action below:

Also added in are new cloud formations like towering cumulonimbus clouds and wavy undulating clouds, a bunch of new ambient sounds and new torch visuals, 42 variants of sea shells now spawn on beaches and there's also fluffy leaves for all the trees which really does look good:

There's also improvements to the behaviour of falling blocks, to the point that you could cause an avalanche, improvements to the style of tools, thunder and lightning effects were added and loads more. While all of that is quite big, they're not done. They still have all this planned for the full release of Vintage Story 1.12:

  • Optimization pass. The new weather system and fluffy leaves are rather costly. I hope to add a low detail mode or something of the sorts.
  • A special drifter drop during low temporal stability
  • A mannequin to put your armor on
  • A helve hammer to semi-automate smithing
  • Immersive Armor crafting
  • Animated chest lid, double chests
  • Rock boulders, a luminescent block in caves, papyrus root, rotatable containers
  • New drifter models, tool model overhaul, canvas block
  • 1-2 new creatures

See the update notes here for 1.12-pre.1, we will keep checking back on it as more pre-releases arrive for this massive new version to the already in-depth survival experience.

You can find Vintage Story on the official site, Humble Store or itch.io.

They are actually very different.

Anyway, i comment on every news about VS, so i will say it again : it's the best of its genre, and each update makes it more true.

I couldn't resist any longer and pulled the trigger. I've only had the chance to play for about 90 minutes so far, but it's fun. A lot more complex than Minecraft, and it seems to play very differently. I don't know how much longer I can survive on cattail roots and berries...

If you buy from their website, I understand you will get an account like Minecraft. What happens when you buy from itch.io or Humble?

Maybe said account isn't required all the time.

QuoteIncludes the following

A game account, which is required to start the game and to connect to most multiplayer servers.
A digital download of the game that is yours forever
Free updates forever
The forum title "Vintarian" and access to a vintarian only forum area may be redemed at a later time.

I tried this only briefly.
Is there enough stuff to do currently ?
Like .... do you get mobs , items , stuff to craft , enough biomes to explore etc ?

EDIT : even IF it is a Minecraft clone , sans creepers , i consider it an improvement :P

I think it's a great game. Not a million miles away from minecraft but so much more depth. I think it's like minecraft for adults.

I've played about 30 hours on one map so far and still think there is plenty to do, plus it's being updated really regularly. If you're on the fence about getting it I would really recommend giving it a go. I think they have a very generous returns policy too so if you don't get on with it then it's not an issue.

Ooooh, this looks good, I'll keep an eye on it and buy it at some stage (still so many games in my backlog). This looks right up my street. I've never played Minecraft BTW.

The game looks like Minecraft...
People told you on this thread is not...
But they don tell you what are those "huge" differences...
Still looks like Minecraft...

Also no Steam...

I don't buy games directly from the developer, learned that the hard way.

PS: Minecraft is also being played by adults, despite not being "so deep" as this one.

Minecraft bored me after like two days of playing. Just grind and grind and grind and I paid for it :(. Vintage Story is grind and grind and grind, but game is more believable.
Objects do not pop out of the thin air, but the process of creation is more sophisticated. You can not create mining pick by gluing three rocks and few sticks with mysterious goo while you are on the biological pause, ehm, but you need to do few more steps than just "do craft" (make molds, burn them, smelt ore {you can not use the wood cause it is not hot enough}, cast it and than wait till it get cold and than you glue it together).
You can not crush rock with bare hands or the wooden stick, but you need the pick.
The very big difference for me is that the Anego Studios is not Microsoft.
The game is backed by Austria funds, so the probability that the Mr. Madlener is scammer or loon is relatively low. I am happy that I red the article about the game here and bought it. The Vintage Story is obviously child of love.
I think the VS game is related to Minecraft as Sil to Angband... Both are "Moria" games, but Sil is way more complex and somehow closer to JRRT world settings.
If you are sick of Minecraft because of overdosing by it, you will not enjoy the VS either. It is "clone" and main activity in game is grinding and grinding and grinding.
It is not "they" said anymore.
I said and I tried to show you the differences. Helped?
