Some game industry news to share today, as the Vulkan development lead at Feral Interactive has announced they're moving on. A big change too, as they're jumping over to Sony to work on the PlayStation.

Alex Smith announced their departure on Twitter today:

Sad to say today is my last day at Feral. It's been an awesome 3 years leading our Vulkan development, and working on our first Switch ports - thanks to everyone at Feral for being fantastic to work with, and to the Linux gaming community for playing all the ports I've worked on!

This comes a little over a year after their Linux development lead left for Unity. Thanks to Alex's work, Feral's recent Linux ports powered by Vulkan like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total War: THREE KINGDOMS and more have been fantastic to play through.

After speaking privately to Alex, they confirmed that Feral has plenty of capable Vulkan developers ready to take over in their ranks. That's good, as we have Life is Strange 2 and Total War Saga: TROY confirmed to come to Linux plus a tease of more.

We wish all the best to Alex, I've no doubt there's a ton of people gaming on Linux that will continue to appreciate their Vulkan work for years to come.

Quote...working on our first Switch ports...

After watching Jim Sterling's gushing review of Alien Isolation on the Switch the other day, I was wondering if Feral had done the port.

Sounds like they are going to help Sony with their backwards compatibility since the new xbox might play all xbox games from day one

Thanks Alex for all the work and effort put into the ports with your team.

I'm pretty sure you'll find other challanging and interesting things to work on over at Sony. Good luck on that journey.

Thanks Alex!
We guys could show off with benchmarks thanks (but not limited) to that dude! :)
It's worth mentionning he was maintaining "gamemode" as well, cleaning builds, managing merge requests and all.
A hero went on to new adventures. May he finds thrilling experiences!

Well good luck hope the new GIG goes as well as the feral work. Nice to see my native British Feral intereactive still plowing on with ports despite many devs ditching native in favour of proton hands off approach.
