Dota Underlords looks like it will leave Early Access in February, big update coming

Valve have announced that Dota Underlords, their auto-battle strategy game will get the first proper Season by the end of February, which means it will leave Early Access.

However, they still have a lot coming. There's at least one more update coming before this, with one more Underlord coming as well. The bigger stuff sounds like it's coming with the Season 1 update to end Early Access with their official Battlepass, City Crawl game mode, Hero / Item rotation and UI updates.

Underlords has continued to lose players over the last few months, although still quite popular with it regularly getting over ten thousand players the drop has been quite dramatic even over the last two months. Across December it was hitting over sixteen thousand regularly, now it's getting close to being below twelve thousand and shows no sign of slowing.

The playerbase might become a bit more stable when the full update is out, since they've been changing the gameplay quite drastically in the last few updates, it's hard to stay connected to it right now even if you do enjoy it. Personally, I'm keen to see what City Crawl actually is. It seems to be some sort of single-player adventure campaign, so that by itself could be a lot of fun. Once it's confirmed, we will let you know.

I'm quite interested to try it, but I didn't want to live through all the big changes. I'll finally give it a go once it's out of Early Access.

Overall it's a great game and I found two of the newest modes the most interesting: knockout and duos. Duos is awesome with a friend, you can cooperate and strategize helping each other, sending heroes and money, leveling up together etc. Knockout is really good because it's fast and rewarding, you can finally see 3-star top tier heroes which is almost impossible in the classic mode; the games last from 10 to 20 minutes (if you're winning slowly). And the classic mode is the most boring and seemingly random, takes a lot of time and I personally get cornered too often if I keep losing rounds, can't roll the heroes I need and don't get much gold because can't play the economy game with the trash I get.

Is this game based on 99% RNG 1% tactic ? I'm playing it now, about 2 hours in, but i don't see the appeal so far.

Nothing to keep inbetween games, i just pick stuff, try to build team, and when i lose, i lose, and start over. Just some crappy flags to unlock ?

I wouldn't say it's 99% RNG. You still make choices what heroes and alliances to pick, some work well together, some don't. Some alliances are primary, some fill the support role. You also choose whether to roll for heroes or save gold for additional income. Don't forget about positioning which is also important because assassins now jump a little later and can easily take out your ranged units from the back. The RNG factor is still important but consider the fact that there's ranked mode and some people have much higher rank than others so they definitely play better and RNG is exactly the same for everyone.

RNG ruins the gameplay especially in Knockout, however, DUOs are really good and compensates for RNG, but you need to be on voice comm to be effective. Although I still play a lot of knockouts when I am on the phone.
