Daedalic Entertainment have been a good developer and publisher for Linux and they continue to be great. Edna & Harvey: The Breakout - Anniversary Edition, the upgraded version of the 2008 adventure game is now on Linux.

This enhanced version of the multi-award winning adventure game released in December last year, with it gaining Linux (and macOS) support only yesterday. It has been given a "complete overhaul" with better controls, high resolution art and "new technology" (so an upgraded game engine and things like that).

What's the story here then?

When Edna wakes up, she has no memories of her past, or why she finds herself in the padded cell of a sanatorium. Though she hasn't the slightest idea how she ended up in a cell, one thing is certain: She wants to get out of there!

After all, she feels positively sane – and her talking plush bunny Harvey absolutely agrees. Together they try to make their escape and meet the weirdest inmates – from a man in a bee costume to the pseudo-siamese twins Hoti and Moti. But Dr. Marcel, the head of the sanatorium, does everything in his power to stop Edna from leaving. What is his endgame? And why has her memory been wiped? Bit by bit, Edna remembers the time before the sanatorium...

If you're into point and click and didn't yet play it: Get it.
Edna is a labour of love the creator did in university.
I was at Daedalic's once and they said, it wouldn't be commercially feasible to put so much work in such a game under normal cirumstances.

I like their claim in the news:
Less boundaries - more insanity!

Seeing no native version as a boundary... That's the spirit!

Ah, maybe they're then ready to also deploy my Linux port of the original game, at least as a steam beta, too. Last time they were too busy with other projects to look at my code here

I just bought the DRM-free Gog version of the (windows only) original last year. If the new version became DRM-free I'd buy it again.

I hope they will release it on GOG too!

It's now on GOG, link added.

It seems past owners of the game on GOG.com get a 50% discount. I also picked the game up on sale last fall alongside its already Linux supporting sequel after seeing some of Kikoskia's Let's Play.

There's a bundle on Steam with the same effect.

More than happy to pay $13.49 CAD to upgrade to a native version.

For some reason, neither the Edna and Harvey games nor The Whispered World ever managed to really catch my interest, even though I have everything else from their P&C adventure catalogue.

But I really appreciate how most of their games eventually got a Linux release, except for Chains of Satinav and Memoria, which are among my absolute favorites (though I'm glad that those are now available DRM free on GOG, at least!).

If only they would release something new in that genre ...

The original game is "native" as well, as it is written in Java. It just needs a bit larger heap size than OpenJDKs default setting, but there's a command line parameter for that.

Edit: I'm talking about the Retail version - no idea about the Steam version.

Ooooh... I don't like the new graphics. :( They didn't keep the style.

Which is why the old graphics are still available as a toggle.

Okay, still more than happy to have it count as a Linux sale.

Well, yeah, but I meant I'd love if the new graphics kept the style of the old ones. You know, refreshed but without the political correctness bullshit.

the political correctness bullshit.

Oh man, whining about free speech and free art is everywhere. What's it this time?
