Another fresh release of a wonderful open source project for Linux is here, with the Vulkan post-processing layer vkBasalt continuing to advance.

What is vkBasalt? It allows you to run a bunch of special effects on top of your games. Effects like FXAA, Contrast Adaptive Sharpening, SMAA and more to help you appreciate your favourites - especially when various graphical features are missing from the game.

Released today, vkBasalt 0.3 is quite a big one as it can now use "a big number" of ReShade FX shaders extending what's possible with it on Linux. FXAA quality was improved, VK_KHR_swapchain_mutable_format is now used for sRGB <-> UNORM format conversion if available, Vulkan applications now get pumped up to Vulkan 1.1 to enable newer features to be used and there's some bug fixes as well.

With the ability to use ReShade FX, this opens up lots of advances and some slightly less advanced stuff like the ASCII shader which can end up making things a bit artsy:

Not very practical of course, a little too hard to make things out correctly like text but it could make for some awesome backgrounds.

Check out the release notes for vkBasalt 0.3 on GitHub.

Native Reshade shaders compatibility is frigging awesome!!! Although DXVK has already seen some code action to make it ReShade compatible, nothing beats native support.
